Royal Navy bomb disposal experts have already carried out controlled explosions on some of the devices with more planned. Coastguard and Fisheries officials were called out after the shells were spotted on the beach, which is a popular area with dogwalkers. Copeland councillor David Moor said the scale of the find now being dealt with was “unprecedented” and warranted some kind of investigation. He said: “I knew that something had been found the other day, but I wasn’t aware of the quantity. “I also knew that the bomb disposal people had spent some time up there dealing with it but this amount is very unusual. They should all be buried in sand on the seabed. |
