ITT I show you how the El Reno tornado was able to kill the most experienced storm chasers.
This tornado was eventually rated an EF5 with max winds of 296 mph measured by a mobile doppler, with a maximum width of 2.6 miles. That maximum width was very near where it killed Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras, and Carl Young. Tim was one of the most experienced tornado chasers in the world, and Carl was not too far behind him in his level of knowledge and experience.

It killed 3 highly experienced storm chaser/tornado researchers in one vehicle and another amteur storm chaser in another vehicle, and killed over a dozen other people.

To see how 3 highly experienced storm chasers could get killed, go here and watch from 2:25 on.

Tim and Co. are located to the left side forward about 3 miles from this camera, to the left of the tornado at 2:50 in the video ...

watch from 2:25 on at the transformation. The tornado becomes rain-wrapped, enlarges, and then also moves hard left, going from a southeast direction of travel to a northeast direction of travel. This combination can be a deadly one for anyone no matter how experienced they are.

Here is another really good example showing how it caught people off guard. Rapidly exanding and shifting in unusual ways ...

These guys were caught on the edge of it as it rapidly expanded, and they barely made it out.

Amazing footage, retarded people.

Risking their lives over something so pointless baffles me.

Crazy footage... Not sure how intellegent these guys are that are chasing them are? I could see it being a lot of fun but we always have this condition where we want to get just one step closer to danger..

Youll find the average chaser has an intelligence level probably in the 90th percentile.

As far as Tim, Carl, and Paul, they were part of the Twistex team-

No doubt a part of it was fun, but it is also a paying job for many storm chasers, and also results in science benefits for all.

The Moore tornado of May 20th killed 23 people. That same tornado going through the same houses would have killed 100+ people 40 years ago. Part of that lowered death rate is directly due to the work of storm chasers and tornado researchers. Heck, Fujita himself was a storm chaser.

And if you listen to this presentation by Tim, youll see he was a very intelligent man-

Here's information on the other solo storm chaser who was killed. It sounds like it was his first and last rodeo with a bull tornado.
