In a bipartisan, unanimous decision, California’s Senate has approved Senate Bill 566, a measure to legalize hemp. The proposal now heads to the state’s House, where its passage would put it to the governor for final consideration.

“The California Industrial Hemp Farming Act will create new jobs and economic opportunities for many farmers and manufacturers across California,” stated Senator Mark Leno, the bill’s prime sponsor, “Hundreds of consumer products containing hemp are made in the Golden State, but the manufacturers of these goods are forced to import hemp seed, oil, and fiber from growers in Canada, Europe, and China.

Hemp should be grown in all the 50 states. This would help the economy and renew the soil.

This will destroy the entire underground economy of out-door cannabis growing. The pollen from industrial hemp will ruin it :P.

I read that somewhere.

I think it would be of concern if there were a ton of folks growing "smoke" next to or with in a 5 mile radius of a hemp field. I think this would put greater importance of the whole know your smoke farmer, and where he/she grows, and possibly raise prices for good quality, un-pollinated/polluted stuff no? I don't know, my source is an indoor op, so this isn't of a concern. Guess we'll see how this works out. If it can be done with GMO crops vs. Organics, why not cannabis right?

I'm all for this bill. I thinks it's awesome and about freaken time.

That's not true. It would only effect the seeds of the next generation. The chronic would still be chronic, but the seed would be cross-pollinated under your scenario.

Legalized Hemp on a national scale could possibly save us from Big Oil, Big Chem and Big Pharma. At the very least, it could provide some alternatives. There's never been any challenge to their power in industry. Expect them to squash Hemp before it can become a threat. My money is on Monsanto to do the dirty work. How hard could it be?

the article claims it's inevitable on the fed level.

"The proposal – similar to a law that was approved earlier this year in Kentucky – is designed to prepare California for the inevitable end to hemp prohibition on the federal level, something numerous federal lawmakers are working towards, including the Republican leaders of both the House and Senate."

"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country."
- Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President quote on Hemp

"Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere."
- George Washington, U.S. President quote on Hemp

"Why use up the forests which were centuries in the making and the mines which required ages to lay down, if we can get the equivalent of forest and mineral products in the annual growth of the hemp fields?"
- Henry Ford quote on Marijuana

"We shall, by and by, want a world of hemp more for our own consumption."
- John Adams, U.S. President quote on Hemp

This country was BUILT on hemp.. it's one of the strongest NATURAL fibers in the world. In fact, it was a law to GROW hemp in the 1800s.

Marijuana SHOULD be legalized, because it does not kill you, or damage your body like most pharmaceutical drugs..

Marijuana is illegal because a lot of businesses would go under if it was made legal.
