I guess I'm lucky. Both of my kids (adults now) are very smart, both book-wise AND they have common sense. They both have a great work ethic to boot. Hard workers they are!! By the time they graduated from high school they had scholarships, college credits and had $5,000+ saved up and the other had over $10,000 saved.

My wife and I are both teachers. We have raised incredibly bright, talented young women. The oldest graduated 4th in her class with a 4+ GPA. She will be attending the Ohio State University as a dance major (auditions required) on partial academic scholarship. She ran track (broke the school's 1600m record the first time she ran it; 22nd in the state in her division in the 800m her freshman year), acted, danced, choreographed, directed, and was chosen the best social studies and drama student of the year by her teachers. She sings like an angel and writes even better.

Her younger sister has had all As throughout her academic career and is a rising junior in high school. She plays basketball, softball, runs track, and rides.

They've been read to or have read every day of their lives, and we run a fairly tight ship in terms of what we allow them to do.

After she graduated three weeks ago, our eldest thanked us for being "strict" with her as she was growing up. That was one of the best things either of them has ever said to us.

It CAN be done, but it's the hardest thing in the world.
