Giant crocheted doily appears under Bristol bridge (Photo)
The 12ft (3.6m) diameter "spider web" was seen hanging under Stapleton Road railway bridge by Gail Boyle as she drove into work earlier.

"It's a massive piece of crochet... and the nylon cord must be up to an inch thick," she said.

"I've no idea who is responsible, it might be 'yarn bombing', but I crochet and I know that they are proper crochet stitches," she added.

Hi, Smilesun! That's the best bit of yarn bombing I've seen so far. Usually, it's kind of tacky looking.

5 *'s, just because I crochet and appreciate the work that went into it. AND...it actually looks good!!

People should be aware that displaying these pieces of crochet work in public areas is an attempt on someone's part to convey the message that they could just as easily have placed a destructive device where the crochet work was displayed instead.

Such display should not be dismissed as something "funny" or "odd". It sould be taken as a warning.

dear Smilesun, wasn't it you who had the thread about the bridge with the phallic pattern when the sun shines through the railing?

Could you name that thread for me, so I can see it again?

It is not in my favorites any longer.

Rev., it's not hard to learn the basics. There a lot of really good tutorials on the web. There's even a crocheting for dummies book.

It just gets harder when you start learning to do fine work. The smaller the fiber, the more difficult it is. Anything with worsted weight yarn is easy to learn.

I've got an "in" - next door neighbor owns a yarn shop in town, dyes her own and teaches classes. ;)

This is the perfect hobby for an expunker grandma. Thanks for the inspiration!

Oh, lucky you! I'm jealous! All we have are the big box stores. At least Hobby Lobby's brand yarns are made in Turkey. They make some of the best, I think. I have to order specialty yarns and I don't like doing it. I like to feel it before I buy it. That sounds weird, but if it's stiff and scratchy, it most likely won't make up well.

Have fun and don't get discouraged. It's a peaceful, portable hobby!
