Police at DUI checkpoint go crazy, shoot at everything (update)Police get free drugs, sex with teen hookers
Please, please quit randomly shooting into crowds! Anybody know what led to this free for all?

Seven deputies put on leave, two men facing charges after checkpoint shooting

[link to www.wect.com]

They were stunned with what was happening, as officers reportedly shot dozens of rounds - in the direction on-coming traffic.

"Cops are shooting from the front of the car, back into the rest of the on-coming traffic to the check point, into the rest of the innocent civilians down the road," said Cleerdin.

Cleerdin says he believes the officers acted with no regard for public safety.

"It was way beyond reckless," said Cleerdin. "I couldn't believe it. These are professional people, professional officers, and they're training, they're highly trained and they're not supposed to do stuff like that."

Officials with the sheriff's office are keeping tight lipped about the incident. No one will tell us who shot the two suspects, or what even led up to the shooting.

Seven sheriff's deputies – four with Brunswick County and three with New Hanover County – are on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Leland on Friday night in which two men were shot.

The deputies are Brian Medlin, Joe Cherry, John Rogers and Larry Branch with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, and deputies J. Maroldt, J. Spivey and Sgt. M. Fike, with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, according to press releases from the agencies.

They are pack animals and as such, when one starts shooting or beating someone, they all want to get in on it. It is also a sign of their self centered and Supremecy dogma that they live by. "I will go home at any cost to anyone else" they feel anyone or anything that does not cower at once to their demands is a lethal threat and needs to be eliminated.

That's a really scary incident.

That couple is lucky that both of them were not killed.

I imagine the police department is being 'close-lipped" about the incident so they do not get their asses sued by all the would-be victims.

Only cops should be entrusted to operate fire arms. This is a perfect example of that. NOT! Doesn't it always look like cops jump at any chance to unload if they feel threaten.

I had looked for an update to this story, and found all this instead. Apparantly, Brunswick County has had some major problems in the past with corruption & scandals at all levels of govt/civil service positions.

Here's a few of the bigger scandals I found:

----------

August 2012 - Brunswick County, NC - former DA indicted for conspiracy on the cover-up of a murder of a police woman who had been shot in the head. Had reported it as a suicide.

Why did he lie about it? (paraphrased) Because he didn't want the small town charm to be tarnished.

-----------

2008 <snipped>

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Department is investigating the largest fraud case they've seen in years. A former Brunswick County DSS worker was arrested earlier this week for obtaining property under false pretenses. Investigators say April Stucks used the personal identification of people living outside of North Carolina and submitted their information to obtain public assistance benefits.

Detectives say she then cashed the checks herself at a small grocery store in Wilmington. Five others were involved in the scam. Brunswick County detective Vince Saponaro explained, "She would sign them up for benefits that they were not eligible for, people who weren't Brunswick county residents, and in exchange she would ask for half of the money back." The checks Stucks allegedly cashed totaled more than $100,000 in state and federal funds.

While ColCor targeted Columbus County Corruption, federal agents were waging a similar investigative war in Brunswick County—Operation Gateway.

Twenty-two indictments were handed down in Operation Gateway by the same special investigative grand jury responsible for ColCor indictments.

More than a dozen people, several of whom were public officials, were arrested when the walls surrounding the drug-smuggling and corruption operation came crumbling down.

2011 <snipped>

Over the past few years, the SBI has assisted in more than 500 investigations of public officials. They include the cases of Ronald Hewett, a former Brunswick County sheriff who was charged with federal and state crimes of embezzlement and obstructing justice, and former U.S. Rep. Frank Balance, who was sent to prison for funneling tax dollars to his nonprofit foundation.

Re: Police at DUI checkpoint go crazy, shoot at everything (update)Police get free drugs, sex with teen hookers
Way to go guys, they managed to shoot their own patrol car!

Do we need to be engaging in this sort of activity in order to bust two black guys for a half ounce of weed? Is there any way to catch them that is safer for both bystanders and the police?

Do roadblocks work, or do they just cause more problems than they are worth?

[link to www.wect.com]

The chief said one suspect got out of the car and tried to run but was caught. The other suspect continued to drive, and deputies used a pit maneuver in an attempt to stop the car. After the spinout, the car kept going so offers opened fire on the vehicle again because they believed there was still a threat to their safety.

Ingram said he was not sure how many bullets were fired during the incident.

No officers or civilians were injured in the shooting, but a New Hanover County Sheriff's patrol car was hit by a bullet. Sgt. JJ Brewer with NHCSO said the officer was not inside the vehicle when it was shot. The car was parked at the checkpoint.

another point of view on DUI checkpoints:

[link to www.copblock.org]

Besides the fact that you can’t prevent crime (something I learned in Minority Report – thanks Tom Cruise), which is my point above, DUI checkpoints are used as the excuse to pull you over. The city or police departments pitch it as a “keep the roads safe” program. Yet, does it really keep people safe? At least ten officers spent about four hours in ONE spot looking for drunk people. Even if we hadn’t CopBlocked the checkpoint, word would have gone around exposing the location. If the goal was to keep the roads more safe, wouldn’t the officer’s time be better spent mobile? Or maybe the taxpayers – federal taxpayers, checkpoints are often federally funded spamnts – could have saved money by not having one at all?

In this case, a checkpoint itself caused a very dangerous situation by making a couple of weed carrying drivers to panic and officers, who, from the looks of prior news reports may have some issues, to respond in a way which could've killed numerous innocent civilians.

But they did not shoot any kittens or taser a guy on a bicycle and run over him, 4/10 better luck on copDOOM next time.

Its Brunswick, more chaos is always possible.

Brunswick comes through again!

When not shooting at cars, they may be found soliciting hookers-WTF is wrong with this dude's forehead?:

[link to northbrunswick.wect.com]

The sheriff's office drug enforcement unit arrested Timothy Paul Caulder, from Shallotte. He's facing two charges of soliciting crimes against nature, two counts of soliciting prostitution and one count of willfully failing to discharge duties

At least they dropped the felony charges against the DA:

[link to southbrunswick.wect.com]

According to Gore's attorney, the former DA received a suspended sentence of 60 days in jail
and 12 months of supervised probation. Once Gore pays a $5,000 fine, the
probation will be unsupervised.

His law license is
suspended for six months.

lol OP i assume you are also a resident of brunswick county. somehow i never heard about that roadblock shooting. im well familiar with the corruption here though. the bald head island officer found dead execution style ruled a suicide. our 5th grade d.a.r.e. speaker former sheriff ronald hewitt had deputies collecting bi-monthly payments from friends of mine so they could sell their crack without pressure. at any given time i have at least one friend in brunswick county jail, and have been there myself a few times. i was beaten by officer mitch prince for skateboarding on oak island long before he was shot and killed, also beaten by officer danny shannon for a punk in drublic before he was relieved. officer ledbetter in boiling spring lakes was also recently relieved of duty pending sbi investigations (i was friends with his son, man was a bastard). i really cant believe i never heard about the roadblock shooting, but thats what i get for refusing to watch tv. this place has always been ripe with filthy cops.

The war on drugs leaves too many opportunities for corruption.

Note that Rex Gore, now being investigated, made the determination of "suicide":

[link to www.wwaytv3.com]

The DA at the time, Rex Gore, dismissed the case as a suicide. But Jones' father, Loy Buff says he knows his daughter was murdered and that Gore was covering up what really happened that October night in 1999.

“I often hear about people talking about closure,” said Buff. “I don't feel like it's come.”

Though its been several years since his daughter's death, Buff remembers that night like it was yesterday.

“It was a full moon,” recalls Buff. “Of course, she worked the night shift. She went to work on the six o'clock ferry.”

33-year- old Jones never made it off Bald Head Island that night. Her body was found near the lighthouse with a gunshot to the back of her head. The shot came from her service handgun while she was on patrol.

Its been this bad since the drug war took off, 'shine never caused this much violence and corruption. Look into the ColCor investigation, to see the dawn of the problem

[link to crime.blogs.com]

COLCOR's success was largely due to the deep undercover work by FBI Special Agent Robert Drdak who's testimony to the Grand Jury led to the arrest of a long list of prominent Brunswick and Columbus County citizens. Brunswick County Sheriff Herman Strong (numerous charges of conspiring to smuggle drugs, providing protection to drug smugglers, accepting bribes and 2 incidents of drug smuggling marijuana and methaqualone tablets), Shallotte Police Chief Hoyal "Red" Varnum (conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 1,100 to 1,400 pounds of marijuana) and his brother Steve Varnum (a past Chairman of the Brunswick County Commissioners), Lake Waccamaw Police Chief L. Harold Lowery, (racketeering in connection with taking $1,650 in bribes for protection money), a former Columbus County Commissioner Edward Walton Williamson (who gave the undercover agent money to deal with Star News reporter Judith Tillman and send her back to Alabama), District Court Judge J. Wilton Hunt (racketeering and interstate gambling), State Rep. G. Ronald Taylor, (burning three warehouses belonging to another state senator who was Taylor's competition in the farm-implement business) Senator RC Soles (influence peddling, vote tampering, buying votes for District Attorney candidate Rex Gore, conspiracy to affect commerce by extortion), Lt. Governor Jimmy Green (charged with taking a $2,000 bribe and conspiring to take $10,000 in bribes a month) and an assorted cast of characters right out of some southern gothic horror film.

RC Soles has gone on to win the highest honor the state can bestow, the Order of the Long Leaf pine, despite being connected with an ongoing soap opera's worth of havoc

There is a lot of money to be made from illegal drugs, and with money comes temptation:

[link to www.smashwords.com (secure)]

Petey’ Powell’s memoir is the brilliantly illustrated story of how a son's love for his father and family, inadvertently resulted in him making millions in the drug trade in rural North Carolina.

'Big Mike’ was the class president of Hallsboro High School's graduating class of 1973, but in a desperate response to southern poverty, chose to sell cocaine as a means of survival. As Fate would have it, that decision would take him from class president to million-dollar hustler, to heroin addict; almost losing it all.
