The whole concept of closing the border is very difficult to do. And unpleasant.
Canada has a reasonable system. They grant work permits, where the worker must apply in his or her home country and be invited in for a specific period of time. They're getting guest workers this way from Mexico and Latin America, and those workers leave at the end of their visas so they can apply again. Of course if they overstay they can never come back.
This would probably cut into the infrastructure of illegal immigration enough to dry up much of the undocumented supply. It's worth a try anyway.
In any case, amnesty with a path to citizenship -- NO WAY!
