To the children of the 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's
How have we let it get to the state it has already?......and it's is getting worse!

....a little reminder -

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BORN IN 1930's, 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's and Early 80's !!!
First, you survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, your baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

You had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when you rode your bikes, you had no helmets, not to mention, the risks you took hitchhiking .. As children, you would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun.

You drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle. You shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. You ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but you weren't overweight because...... YOU WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

You would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach you all day. And you were OK.

You would spend hours building your go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out you forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, you learned to solve the problem .

You did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........YOU HAD FRIENDS and you went outside and found them!

You fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents you played with worms(well most boys did) and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although you were told it would happen, you did not poke out any eyes.

You rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing you out if you broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. You had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and you learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

.....makes you realise how much this modern shithole has creeped up on us almost unawares.

Thats because the late 80's was the crossover zone..the period of time when intelligence was starting to give way to brainless dumb fucks like we see all around us now.

So 50% of those born then will have some brains..the rest wont.

People born in those decades invented air conditioning, televisions, video games and the internet. Then as adults they work hard (and sometimes go into debt) to make sure they have all those things and more comforts in their homes. Then yell at their kids to go outside. It is crazy from both perspectives is my point.

This is why I try to practice "free-range" parenting as much as possible. I let my kids play outside, get their bumps and bruises, etc. My biggest concern for their safety and the safety of our family is some busy-body calling the police because I dare let my 8 year-old ride her bike around the block by herself. Most of the parents I know live in fear and won't let their kids be kids.

The access to information has caused fear to rise in the current populace. No one knew about the dangers of this and that unless you went to the library or actually knew someone who held a degree in whatever science or art. Nowadays, you can go on to youtube and get the unemployment rate, crime rate, current government scams, what disease has just mutated, whos the new serial killer in town and which cop precent has just gotten more crooked, just in a matter of seconds from one 5 minute youtube video... We didt have that back in the day, what we didnt know, couldnt hurt us. Its the best mindset to ever live by and that day and age will always be remembered but will never be revisited by this current age. RIP the golden years.

Parents were not allowed to have any further input.

Its illegal to try to instill discipline and respect in a child since 1990...the sate took over..and woe betide the parent who dared try to BE one.

The American version of knock and run includes leaving a flaming bag of dog feces on the doorstep.

As for scrumping, that would've been a good way to end up with a rump full of buckshot, depending on the neighbor. At the very least, your parents would get a phone call, then your hide would be tanned at home.

I was born in the late 80s so it's not the same.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42378771

If you were born in the late 80's, then technically you're a child of the 90's. That's when your true childhood memories begin.

The 80's were the last decade of any kind of childhood normalcy. It's sad to say, but those who grew up in the 80's probably really do have more in common with those who grew up in the 40's than those who grew up in the 90's. 80's kids were the last generation to experience a wild, daring, and creative childhood while still maintaining their childlike innocence.

Of course, there are still some differences between the generations listed. There was definitely an erosion that occurred over the years in freedoms and changes in attitudes that made a child in the 80's unable to have the childhood of someone who grew up in the 40's.

I seriously doubt someone who grew up in the 80's could have gotten away with the things my generation did. I remember a bunch of us piling in the back of a pick-up truck driven by a 13-year old all over town without anyone batting an eye. No one would have thought anything of a 10-year old boy walking through town carrying a hunting rifle either.

....a little reminder -

You merkans have non sense of mischief..knocking on doors and running?

Stealing apples??

How LAME.

When I was a kid me and my friend used to not only knock on doors..but put a grogan into a bag and light it and THEN run..and watch em answer the door and stamp it out...

Used to find fresh dogshit and put it under all the car door handles we could find...

Used to put silicone sealant into every lock on every door in shopping districts about 4 hours before opening time..and watch and laugh as everyone turned up for work..and could not open their doors..and watch every locksmith in town make a LOT of money on those days.

All that and much more...mischief that never actually HURT anyone..but CLASSIC to watch..

THATS mischief.

Aussie style.
