Gun grab? No Trayvon Martin DNA on George Zimmerman gun, expert says (+video)
Gun grab? No Trayvon Martin DNA on George Zimmerman gun, expert says (+video)

A forensics expert testified Wednesday that no DNA from slain teenager Trayvon Martin was found on the gun George Zimmerman used to shoot him. Zimmerman has reportedly said Trayvon tried to grab the gun as the two fought.

Teenager Trayvon Martin's DNA was nowhere to be found on the gun George Zimmerman used to fatally shoot him, a forensics expert testified Wednesday – a development that may cast doubt on the contention that the 17-year-old tried to grab the gun during a fight with Mr. Zimmerman in a gated community in Sanford, Fla.

In Pictures The Trayvon Martin case: Racial profiling or right to defend oneself?

The gun grab features in Zimmerman’s explanation of how he came to shoot and kill the unarmed black teenager in February 2012.

The testimony of a state forensic expert, Anthony Gorgone, provided rare bits of hard evidence in the second-degree murder case. It came amid commentators' doubts that the state has been able to prove that Zimmerman murdered Trayvon after illegally profiling him as a possible criminal.

Mr. Gorgone said he found none of Trayvon’s DNA on Zimmerman’s 9mm Kel-Tec pistol. Zimmerman has asserted, to police and to a friend, that Trayvon had grabbed for the gun before Zimmerman fired.

Mark Osterman, Zimmerman’s best friend and the author of a book defending him, testified Tuesday that Zimmerman told him on the night of the shooting that Trayvon briefly grabbed his gun as the two wrestled on the ground. Mr. Osterman said Zimmerman said to him, “somehow I broke his grip on the gun when guy grabbed between the grip and the hammer.”

Gorgone also testified he found none of Zimmerman’s DNA under Trayvon Martin’s fingernails. Zimmerman has said Travyon was beating him badly before he fired into the teenager’s chest. Nor did he find anything "that matched [Zimmerman]" on Trayvon's hoodie, including on either of the lower sleeves of the sweatshirt, he said.

the fact that he was getting his head smashed into the pavement is justification enough for the self defense shooting. if trayvon was reaching for the gun that would just be a cherry on top

"touch DNA" is very difficult to collect and identify. Simply touching something does not necessarily leave behind enough genetic material to identify the DNA of who touched the object. George Zimmerman's DNA was also unable to be identified from the grip of the gun. The DNA tech collected an actual blood sample from the gun grip, but could not positively identify either GZ or TM DNA in the sample collected. The claim that because Martin's DNA was not identified on the gun, he could not have grabbed for it as Zimmerman claims, is a misleading presentation of the science of DNA .

If you listened to the whole testimony you would have heard the forensic expert testify that there is not 100% certainty that DNA evidence would be found on the gun. Several factors could have accounted for the lack of Trayvon's DNA on the gun such as rain, blood, inadvertent wiping of the gun, etc. So it's not a slam dunk because there is a lack of DNA evidence.

In a fight there is blood, sweat and Saliva. Zimmerman is obviously a liar because he said Trayvon had his hands all over his gun but he wrestled it away from him.

You may WANT Zimmerman to be innocent but he is clearly guilty.

First of all Zimmerman did not say Trayvon had his hands all on it and he wrestled it away. I believe, he said he was going for it and besides zimmerman pulled trigger yet his dna wasn't on it either explain that. If Trayvon only touch holster it is very rough and it hard for dna to adhere to. Plus the fact it was raining that night. That testimony doesn't tell us anything one way or the other.

I believe you said Zimmerman claims "Trayvon TRIED to grab his gun" there is a difference between tried and did if he failed to grab it than there would be no dna however I would be pretty surprised that after shooting a kid at almost point blank range that there would have been some sort of spread of dna to the gun and Zimmerman which I find weird

So what???

Everybody knows touch DNA doesn't happen and is even more rare on non-porous surfaces.

Surely you're not pretending this actually means anything?

Not all touch even leaves fingerprints let alone enough DNA to find.

Besides, those of us following this trial closely watched the ENTIRE testimony and know this doesn't mean squat in actual evidence.

.
One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one.

Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?. . .J. Handy
