Does Math Exist In The Natural Universe, Or Was It Created by Man? A Though Provoking Video
Was math discovered or was it created? Does math exist outside of the human brain? Essentially asks the question if math exists in the natural universe or if it was created by mankind as a system of understanding, explanation, and definition.

One of my favorite quotes from the video. From cognitive linguists George Lakoff and Rafael Nunez.

"Math is able to model regularities in the universe which are not inherently mathematic, but are modeled and understood through math by humans"

Another interesting quote

"The only math that is known by humans, is the math that is knowable by humans. Mathematical realism boils down to a kind of faith. A faith in a mathematical entity, or set of entities, which is out there in the universe waiting to be discovered, and would be there regardless if there was humans or not.

only to a person who sees numbers everywhere. I personally don't buy into it, which is probably why math was my worst subject. I still hate doing math, although I do like Sodoku

Same as asking if rainbows exist buddy, doesn't take a scientist to realize precise or accurate measurements can first only be drawn out by an observer, much like the quantum effect of a rainbow's electromagnetic spectrum.

Im not saying I agree with the video. I believe there are mathematical equations out there, undiscovered and unsolved, that will lead us to technological advances. (antigravity and such)

Re: Does Math Exist In The Natural Universe, Or Was It Created by Man? A Though Provoking Video
Math could not have been created, it had to be discovered. If math was created by man, then it would be flawed. Everything man creates is flawed; what man builds, man can destroy.

Regardless of the language, math is universal? Since we have yet to discover all of the universes mathmatics, it doesn't change what we already understand.

Man knows that there are at least one hundred fifteen elements known to man. This is understood. That doesn't mean the end to the elements.

Humans are a baby race, just starting to understand the wonders of the universe. Give mankind another one hundred thousand years and see what man knows then.

I haven't watched the video. But I'll post my opinion.

Maths is a language. For communication. Simply.

Some things cannot be conveyed by words alone, which is where maths and numbers come in.

Everything we learn (pretty much) is just a communication tool.

Re: Does Math Exist In The Natural Universe, Or Was It Created by Man? A Though Provoking Video
Math is, of course, invaluable as a DESCRIPTION of our Reality.

When it dictates HOW REALITY MUST BEHAVE, then it becomes a perversion.

I am, of course, referring to the perversion of Math by "theoretical astrophysicists."

Math tells us that "Black Holes" exist (this has never been proven, BTW) because Math allows division by zero to result in infinity.

Trying to remember what a math teacher said a few years back. I know its theoretically impossible, but what would you have if you found a way to get a derivative to get past 0? or even get to zero?

Maths exists irrespective of humans, or indeed the Universe. It is the fundamental. The multiverse is merely an inevitable expression of the scope of mathematical possibility. Our lives are simply explorations of higher maths.

Trick question.
This is to suggest that man is outside the "natural Universe" is it not?

Universe creates man, man creates math, universe creates math.

Besides, rules of 1/3, found throughout nature. Scared geometry.. Plenty of math in the universe.

Re: Does Math Exist In The Natural Universe, Or Was It Created by Man? A Though Provoking Video
I guess it boils down to, we are either here or not, then you may say it dosent matter if we are here or not, what matters is if SOMETHING is here or not. The answer is if maths dont exist then we arnt really here. I guess.

Math is created by humans which is why it's got inconsistencies like
-dividing by 0
-more than one infinity
-imaginary numbers

We invented math to help us discuss and communicate certain aspects of the universe. The same as language.

Algorithms exist in nature and are discovered by man.
