What can cause excess fluid in the brain?
Had a major headache numbness in my right hand and blurred vision and trouble thinking. I'm sitting at the hospital waiting on test results. Had a ca
CT scan and the radiologist said I have an unsual amount of fluid around the brain. Waiting to talk to the neutogist. Does anyone know what can cause the excess fluid or anything else.
Thanks

Tumor or injury also.

Stand straight up shoulders back and without moving your body look straight down at your toes, touching your chin to your chest...if you can't then it's good you are at the hospital.

Daughter has a Sudo-tumor suribea. meaning all symtoms of brain tumor but no mass. when pressure(fluid)builds up they drain it off with spinal tap. Took specialist to find it, shows up with eye examine.

Doing some research while waiting on the doctors, sounds like hydrocephalus, don't like what I'm reading. [link to en.m.wikipedia.org]

It's called Intracranial Hypertension or "Pseudo-Tumor Cerebri"
The treatment is usually large doses of Prednisone, but that was over
30 years ago (when I had it).
It tends to resolve itself after some time.
Common symptoms are double vision, blurred vision,
severe headaches, problems with balance.
Left untreated, you could lose your vision.

A man was getting a checkup and told the doc, I don't drink or smoke, I don't eat red meat, I exercise and stay away from sweets, will I live to be 80? The doc says: Why would you want to?

Re: What can cause excess fluid in the brain?
By the way, if it is Pseudo-Tumor Cerebri, don't be alarmed.
It's not a Tumor, the brain just behaves and gives symptoms as if it is.
They may give you a spinal tap to relieve some of the pressure of the extra fluid off your brain, but, contrary to what some think, spinal taps are not painful. One pin prick, a little bit of pressure and its over.
If they do draw off quite a bit of fluid, whatever you do, LIE DOWN for
six to eight hours. Standing or walking after a spinal tap to remove fluid can cause severe headache until normal levels of spinal fluid are replenished.

Did they examine the retinas of your eyes?? If not, tell them to.
Intracranial hypertension is getting more common than it used to be.

It could be anything from a bacteria or virus to electrolytes being out of whack to poor circulation...that's why they run tests...

Just talked to my doctor, it is hydrocephalus. Going to wait and see if the excess fluid will drain on its own or if I need a shunt. If I need the shunt my doctor wants the surgery done at the mayo clinic in Jacksonville I'm at cape canaveral hospital right now. I feel fine now, my doctor believes it caused from trauma I whacked my head at work on may 5 then hard again on July 4

Judging by your diet and lack of previous medical care and chronic head hitting, you sound like a dumb Mormon or Amish. No offence Op, but you sound like a dumb fuck who by getting nailed in the head repeatedly Darwinism in action. Hmmmmmm, my brain hurts and I wonder why? I suppose getting nailed in the head twice is completely unrelated. You dumb fuck.

Well it happened once at work on may 5 and again July 4, both were accidents, shit happens. Hindsight is 20/20. I did not feel any symptoms of trauma so I forgot about it. I am not morman or Amish. What's wrong with a having a healthy diet? Like most Glpers I don't trust the medical system and the last time went to the doctor I had a finger up the ass in front a hot intern when I was 15. Not a fun experience so I only in case of medical emergencies like this one. My primary care doctor does believe this may have been caused by head trauma, but he needs to consult with neurosurgeon and the neurologist. Hopefully the fluid drains on its own so I won't need a shunt put in. Thanks for your input though

That is close to the surgery I will undergo if the fluid around my brain doesn't drain on its own after I get another ct scan next week
