When Martin was first shot he said this could have been his son. The African-American Community is looking at this issue with a set of experiences. It is true that young African American males tend to be more violent than their counterparts. It is also true that African-American men are disproportionately victims of violence. Folks understand the challenges that exist for African-American boys. Traditionally, these issues are handled by state and local governments. Violent protests dishonor what happened to martin and his family. State and local laws need to be examined to see if they encourage altercations like what happened in the Trayvon Martin case. Would martin have been justified to shoot Mr. Zimmerman given the circumstances? If the answer is yes or at least ambiguous, we need to re-examine our laws. Establishment of some brand new federal program may not be what is appropriate here. But it is important to make African-American young men feel better about their futures. It is important for all of us to do some soul-searching. Fial thought: As difficult as this incident was, I don't want us to lose sight of the fact that with each generation race-relations are improving in this country. We have to be vigilant and work on these issues. We must not use these incidents to heighten racial tensions. We must remember that we are doing better than our parents or grandparents. |

The same commentator then posed the question, will Obama's comments today quell the anger over the verdict in the Trayvon martin case or will his comments instead stoke that fire? |

And, remember Obama has made a judgment like this before on a separate case that happened. It was the case of Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates Junior who had been charged with disorderly conduct. Below is a link to the details surrounding that case.
