I have been hearing reports from people that there are comet fragments
that are being tracked that are on a collision course with Earth.

Now, I will readilly dissmiss such things, as I am tired of hearing
doom sayers talk about the Millenium roll over. I, by nature, am a
very skeptical person. So, this is why I am posting this.

I have heard this "rumor" several times for the last month, and today I
hear it on the radio. These are the key points from what I have heard:

1. A periodical comet got too close to the sun and got caught in a
solar flare. This broke the comet into small fragments.
2. Three major fragments (along with thousands of small ones),
described as the "size of a mountain" are heading towards Earth.
3. The initial discovery was made by a group of French astronomers,
who apparently were killed in some kind of a cable car accident on the
way down the mountain from their observatory. (OK, now this is
starting to sound like a movie I once saw.)
4. The impact is supposed to melt some of the ice on our northern
polar cap and raise the ocean level by 170 feet. (Maybe I will buy
some of that Palmdale, CA real estate)

So, has anyone heard anything about this crud? Normally I would give a
hoot about such things, but I am hearing it too often from too many
people. The thing that makes me post this, though, is that the story
has been consistent.

If this were true, I CAN believe that the government would not tell us
until basically the last minute. I believe that they would want to
wait until they knew for sure where it was going to hit, and how much
time it would take to evacuate, etc. Then, to reduce panic for as long
as possible, they tell the world. This, of course, is just my opinion.

So, has anyone else heard about this?
