Is the song "Speedy Gonzales" "racist"?
I played Pat Boone's 1962 hit "Speedy Gonzales" for a friend, who said it "was in poor taste." Others have said it's "racist." I think they're all nuts. It's just a funny, goofy song--geez, doesn't ANYBODY have a sense of humor anymore?

SPEEDY GONZALES

(Spanish-guitar-strumming intro)

Spoken: It was a moonlit night in old Mexico. I walked alone between some old
adobe haciendas. Suddenly, I heard the plaintive cry of a young Mexican girl.

(female voice singing a series of "La-la-la's)

You better come home, Speedy Gonzales
Away from tannery row
Stop alla your a-drinkin'
With that floozie named Flo
Come on home to your adobe
And slap some mud on the wall
The roof is leakin' like a strainer
There's loadsa roaches in the hall

Speedy Gonzales, why dontcha come home?
Speedy Gonzales, how come ya leave me all alone?

Spoken in a male Mexican accent: Hey, Rosita-I hafta go shopping downtown
for my mudder-she needs some tortillas and chili peppers.

(female voice singing a series of "La-la-la's)

Your doggy's gonna have a puppy
And we're runnin' outta coke
No enchiladas in the icebox
And the television's broke
I saw some lipstick on your sweatshirt
I smelled some perfume in your ear
Well if you're gonna keep on messin'
Don't bring your business back a-here

Mmm, Speedy Gonzales, why dontcha come home?
Speedy Gonzales, how come ya leave me all alone?

Spoken in a male Mexican accent: Hey, Rosita-come queek-down at the cantina
they giving green stamps with tequila!!

(female voice singing a series of "La-la-la's)

Re: Is the song "Speedy Gonzales" "racist"?
Here are excerpts from the overwhelmingly pro-Speedy postings on HispanicOnline:

THIS is an Outrage!!! Viva la Mouse! Viva Speedy Gonzales!

Come on! What is America coming to? . . . I guess they'll censor "West Side Story" because they've offended us Puerto Ricans in Nueva York. Get a grip! . . . I say bring Speedy back and let those censored idiots eat frijoles!!

Demeaning? Pleeeease, we need to get over the stupid P.C. [expletive]. I am of Mexican parents and I have much better things to do than worry about Speedy G, unless of course he was in my house – then I would get Señor Sylvester to take care of him.

The problem I have with this is that they are basically saying they know better than Hispanics do and telling them they should be offended by Speedy when in fact most are not.

That little mouse is a hero. . . . How about banning Pepe LePew, for stinking and being French, or Boris and Natasha, for being Russian, or . . . Rocky the Flying Squirrel for not being P.C. to squirrels.

What deee hell is all the rucus about. The leeettle mouse is one of the foniest mouses in all of Mejico. I have enjoyed the leeettle mouse and Slooowpoke for many yeeers. Now, weeee have Pokemon and his amigos. Weee need to bring back Speedy! . . .

I am 30 years old and have found myself saying, "Arriba, Arriba, Olé, Olé" many times throughout my life. The little guy is in me. I have a small stuffed version of him in the back window of my car as I fly through the Houston highways! . . .

I am shocked that this little guy is being questioned over all the other stuff on TV. Give him a break. He's a good, happy, zippy little guy that doesn't beat anyone up, and doesn't have to save the day. He just IS!

If you ask me, the cartoons depict "gringo" society (those crafty American cats . . .) as a not-too-bright, conniving species that exploits anyone who happens to be handy. The Mexican mice are always content in their own pueblos, doing their own thing, and here come the gringos into Mexican turf, interfering and looking out for their own interests. And Speedy always wins! So who is being depicted negatively here?

I'm a Californian transplant To from New York. They taught their alphabet there: Fucken A, Fucken B, Fucken C...

Notice the capitalization.

It was during the AT&T breakup. I thought Taco Bell was a phone company.

Fucken D...

Yeah, it's racist, but so is Pepe Le Pew and Foghorn Leghorn. And what about the Cohen Brothers' Fargo or Oh Brother Where Art You? Everything funny is an attack. The point is having the means and the money to attack back. This is where the unfunniness begins. Who has access to the studios and the media? Who can lampoon the Jews? NOBODY. You got it?

People need to get a frickin' life in this country. I'm so sick of this "politically correct" bs. And it's mainly the younger "20-30something generation" who buys into this bs.

That song was a parody of the Looney Toons character.

Big fuckin' deal. Get over youselves if you're offended and . . .

I'm so sick of this "politically correct" bs.

----------------------------

"Politically correct" is a derogatory term made up by people who wish to continue to insult other ethnic groups. There is no reason to insult other groups of people, and what you are calling "politically correct" is simply a set of guidelines to avoid doing so.

As far as the Speedy Gonzales song goes, it is potentially insulting to Mexicans. (And it's not a spin-off of the Loony Tunes character.) I can't say how most Mexicans feel about it, but I can say that I was a kid when I heard the song the first time, and I thought that it implied that typical Mexicans are lazy, drink a lot, and live in cockroach infested homes. I would be offended if the song were about my ethnic group.

You ought to re-evaluate your sense of humor if you need to make fun of ethinc groups to get a laugh.

A song cannot be racist - in the same way as a gun is not a murderer

I wonder if Pat Boone still sings "Speedy Gonzales" when he does concerts. After all, he did a CD of heavy metal covers about ten years ago...
