Who here has gone through a staffing agency?
These are legitimate jobs right?

Only reason why I ask, I went to a staffing agency today for a 'career fair' but I will say what this agency was advertising was a little misleading. They took advantage of their building name (high profile bank) and made it seem as though it was this bank that was having the career fair. But no, it wasn't the bank, it just so happened this staffing agency had a suite in this big downtown bank building.

Anyway, I didn't want to make it a wasted trip. So I filled out paperwork and they said they had a great call center job with a relatively new company. I have an orientation tomorrow, and if that goes well, next will be an interview with the company.

Thing is, they gave me a sheet of paper with the company name/address/what's expected/hours of availability. So I Googled the company and can't find shit on it, I thought maybe an LLC or Facebook page or something for a newer business - but no dice.

This can't be a scam right? It's through a staffing agency.

More times than not , you will be fired when they dont need you anymore. People use staffing agencies to handle excess work load for a set amount of time.

Re: Who here has gone through a staffing agency?
I have worked for these before.. they are useful to give you work experience to put on your resume.

I would check out the staffing agency you signed up with to make sure they are legit. If the staffing agency is "made up" they could be stealing your info/identity.. if they are legit then you really are not risking anything, because if you don't like the job they will take you off of it.

I got a job at a bank as a "temp" worker with a staffing agency. The bank liked me so they offered me a permanent job after a few months... so it worked well for me. I recommend them to people who want to just "get to work" without going to a million interviews. I tried to find a job for 6 months by myself, but the staffing agency had me working within 2 weeks after I joined.

Re: Who here has gone through a staffing agency?
Looks like the agency is legit, so that's good. A lot of negative reviews though, 1.8 out of 5 stars on Google. Seems they've been pulling the 'career fair' for said bank deal on others since 2011.

A lot of people were pissed today in the reception area, they came with resumes expecting interviews (ad also said get hired today and start tomorrow)- but clearly not the case. These people were not told to bring 2 pieces of id, so for some it was a wasted trip and they let the reception lady have it.

Since it clearly is new since I can't find any info on it, hopefully it's not a hire then fire situation.

Re: Who here has gone through a staffing agency?
well ill speak for the labor part of temp/staffing services( even though im pretty sure you mean staffing only) well staffing agencies are not a scam. this is my girlfriends job here in SC, and trust me they want to get you a job so they can get there cut of money, not just the company but the person who would work your case.

now just for the hell of it im gonna speak on temp services about labor jobs at least. i think all temp services should be illegal, this is a middle man job, they do this to keep you from being able to go straight to a company and apply. i mean it saves the company time by not doing interviews, and lots of companies do this and will not allow you to apply to them in person. now here where the money comes in.say you get hired by a temp service for 10 an hour.. that job is really paying about 15 an hour and that other 5 goes to the temp service!!! pisses me off. but the good part and the way i used to work temp services is. get on a job and bust your ass and more then likely the job will hire you on fulltime, then you can get that extra 5 an hour!!!! i just wish this middle man scam bullshit would be outlawed!!!

Re: Who here has gone through a staffing agency?
Are you referring to employment agencies or temporary staffing agencies

I don't like employment agencies. They take a % of your 1st salary to cover their services of finding you a job. Then, too, when you do get a job, you're on probation, can lose that job or it just didn't work out for you. And you're still stuck paying that fee

Temporary staffing, like Kelly Girls, is a great way to get your foot in the door. Jobs are usually filling in for someone off sick or vacations, but after the term of the job, if I liked the girl I would offer her a full time job. Also, that's a good way to build up some experience for a resume.

Well, they are providing you a service as well- which is finding a job FOR you, and many offer training programs too. I took a typing test and got a good score at the staffing agency, that I was able to put on my resume. The agency provides a service to the employer as well, which is allowing them to observe workers without them actually being on the payroll. If they don't like the worker they can send him back and get a different one, etc. And they can hire the ones they like on a permanent basis
just as easily.

I agree and am aware they make money off your hire.

Do you by chance know what the typical hiring window is - to go from temp to full on employee? I'm guessing maybe 90 day trial?

You don't have to use this agency either... look them up in the phone book. I live in a small town and there are at least 3 in my area... they are everywhere.

Go to their websites too, to see the openings. Some offer general office work and others might offer more labor jobs. It depends on the companies they tend to have contracts with.

I wasn't aware of that % pay. To my knowledge, they stated an hourly rate, I'm assuming it would have paid more than the projected hourly rate but now that is going to the staffing agency.

Pretty sure this job isn't 'fill in' temp. I made it clear to the guy I want a full time 'home' out of this, not to bounce around.

Also, they said they were hiring for 5 positions with said company, which is also why I'm thinking it's not a fill in. Thanks for the info.

I went to a couple temp websites last month and registered, received no calls. At least the one good thing is a process has resulted from this, be it the orientation tomorrow.

I was at Sedona Staffing for 1 year before I got a job with a commercial truck service center in TX years ago.
When I used a staffing agency for the bank job I had, I was hired on permanent within a few months.

Well it's call center based, but it's for a marketing company. So, there's bonus on top of hourly. I'm thinking as long as I'm at or above quota they'll keep me.

i think the 90 days will depend on you.. i mean i seen the same people that started same day with me from a staffing service not get hired on after i did, but again im speaking for labor work, so id have no idea how it might go down in office kinda work, i mean i stayed on the companies ass " when am i gonna get hired on, havent i showed enough" i mean constant asking after my trial period was up, i dont know if that would be a good idea in an office enviroment? i mean my girl doesnt even want me to show up downtown at her job at lunch if im wearing my hat backwards or got my flops or t shirt or jeans on

Re: Who here has gone through a staffing agency?
Every job I have ever had has been a temp job. 2 places they ask to forward the application to their staffing agency, and get on that way after 90 days(one was a Fortune 500 company who had commercials on TV advertising jobs in '06). I worked there two years, and the place I'm at now did the same thing but I been there 3 years. I had many jobs through services in between and before, and held jobs for 6 months+ a few times, and some 1 day jobs. They were in a bind needed someone within the hour to go unload some delivery trucks, was only 1 day (made about $100), but since I did it they promised me a full time job. I find the more you work with them the more they help. If I get hired from a temp position, if I leave I always go back and they find me work right away(because you're a cash crop when working, and they know you can do it)
