Audiophiles! Let's talk about gear and great audio production! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 42021286 United States 07/23/2013 10:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's something old that may be new to ya... One that I used to audition a lot of my gear on was either Jean Michele Jarre's Equinoxe or Oxygene (but the Telarc Labs pressings). They're both nothing but oldschool analog synth, but hit nearly every frequency! LOL Some of the stuff I'd SWEAR rolls off around 20 and there's a good bunch of 17K plus! Real good stuff though! He was originally lumped into the "New Age" genre if you could even find him in the old record stores, but if you're familiar, he's kinda like a milder Kraftwerk without vocals! Pick up Andreas Vollenweider's White Winds for a tasty sonic treat! Bro you just brought back soooo many memories! He's a Harp guy right? I had a few of his too... White Lion or Dancing Lion..Off the top of my head! Thanks for the reminder! I'm definitely going to have to "re-discover" him again! |

I have a lot of their vinyl (Puscifer and A Perfect Circle, too). They sound great, but man, are they noisy! APC sounds nice, but given the rarity of this stuff on vinyl, I'm hugely disappointed in the quality of these pressings (Ænima goes for $200+) Quoting: Fret Wiz I'm big a fan. :). A Perfect Circle is my stuff.. I serenaded my better half with APC and some NIN. She was out of my league but Maynard helped me scoop her off her feet! |

Cost was prohibitive at the time when I first auditioned them! LOL My first wife got my first pair of MandL "Quests" DAMN I miss them speakers!!! My God, they are sexy! Would love to hear them! They (IMO) capitalized on Mag's idea, but greatly improved on it by not only hybridizing them by implementing a coil driven woofer, but they also wrapped their cellulose "tweeter" around a curved frame as to disperse the sound unlike shooting it straight at you like the Mags. Wow, your knowledge is impressive! I found and fell in love with Allisons. I have them all! I wanted to go analog, so I sought out speakers from the 70's/80's. I started with Cerwin's and graduated up from there. I'm learning a lot from you, thanks! Keeping it to that era, the best tip I could possibly give you would be to seek out an original set of JBL L112s. By far, the BEST speaker in that category EVER. Bar none. Everybody from the top studio producers, to the purist homeowners used them. Runner up and a bit less expensive the JBL L166 Horizon series (about half the cost, but alomst as musically accurate). * BOTH were categorized as a "Bookshelf" speaker, but were in truth, floor standing size (studio monitor) with 12 inch woofers! |

Very neutral cans but I like neutral, not too much emphasis on one spectrum and can easily be changed by the EQ. |

I was waiting for somebody to post up on them! The were a SERIOUS speaker a few years back! I haven't owned a set in years though, so I don't even know if they're still around or not... Snake Farm Insurance is being terrible, but after jumping thru hoops and documenting all extremely visible damage from two sf adjusters and my public adjuster and then documentation from service centers we had to drive a total of 8 hours (as we have no high end dealers close to our home) I finally have all the paperwork for these sob's to pay. Glad you know about the asylum. Another good place to get used gear at a reasonable price is at audiogon. Front owners (not the brick and mortar or online stores) offer good prices on high end gear. I've sold a lot (and bought a bit) on this site and many guys just roll gear. Again, thanks for the thread, OP. On another note, thanks ST3. I noted you mentioned audio technica earlier and I agree with you. Some good and resonable priced carts from them. I have a Thorens 160 tt in one of my kids system and I toyed with the AT cart, but went with a reasonably price Grado. I guess that's the fun of it. Trying a lot of gear until you find the fit. All good things to you, ST3 |
