Here's a map showing how easy such a thing would be - ignore the driving directions and just go from the woods in the back of the school, through several back yards, and across the little bridge into Rocky Glen State Park:

One small problem. There is no way to cross the river and those trails lead nowhere and would be very difficult to navigate with an ATV

More likely if an ATV was used that they cut through Treadwell park onto Philo Curtis Rd There were reports that SWAT descended onto a house on Philo Curtis rd

There's a bridge on Glen Rd. Would take less than 5 minutes to get from woods behind school to that bridge. I have no doubt other shooters may have escaped into Treadwell, too. But dogs led police to woods behind school, and to properties between school and Rocky Glen. Cops searched a property behind school for a long time and were interviewing the occupants as well. In fact, I wonder if any of those occupants know Robert Hoagland and/or the friend of his who was aware of the ATV theory.

No, because there were no shooters, because NO ONE WAS SHOT because the whole thing WAS FAKE!

Last time we brought up Rocky Glen a "local" appeared to tell us that the park has no trails and is practically impassable

In fact, it is full of trails and there are trail maps online.

This is ho "unusable" Rocky Glen would be for ATVs...

And this is what "no way across a river" looks like in Sandy Hook:

Heck, I think I'll take an electric quad up there. (Kidding - I wouldn't do that to a state park, regardless of how obviously perfect it would be for such a thing).

Here's the plaque they have in the park for the birds and squirrels to read (since the park is unreachable by humans):

Actually, it would take a lot less than 5 minutes. According to Bing, even if you took the roads--easily 3 times longer as a route--it would take 2 minutes in a car. Safe to say it would take maybe 2 or 3 minutes max, as crow flies/ATV travels, to get from behind the school to the bridge into Rocky Glen.

They could have also cut straight west through 7 Washington St, and taken Glen Rd for about 60 seconds to the bridge. 7 Washington St is in fact the property searched by police extensively on 12/14 well into the afternoon.

Personally, I would not go to Treadwell--it's obvious that area between the school and the interstate is what would be immediately clamped down on, and that's where police would be pouring in. Also, the canopy is not nearly as thick. Rocky Glen is way thick, and away from the action.

Re: Did one of Sandy Hook shooters escape on an ATV?
In fact, you could drive an ATV straight into a garage of one of the homes just across the Rocky Glen bridge, then casually take a waiting car straight down Dayton to Church Hill and be on the interstate to Danbury in a matter of a few more minutes.

Though, again, why any perps would want to chase patients down at Danbury in front of all kinds of witnesses is beyond me.

But that's certainly what police that day thought was happening, so they must have been aware of some specific threat.

There are walkable trails but an ATV would have difficulty , the terrain is almost straight up and there is no place to go in there. It simply would not serve as a practical escape route, no way

the bridge in the picture looks unfamiliar but the bridge on google earth is blocked by barriers so only pedestrians can cross.

some pictures may show some nice wide trails but again the area serves no practical escape potential, there is nowhere to go- one way in and one way out essentially.

Then all those guys living in those nice three story houses smack in the forest must have a helluva time ;)

But seriously, there are multiple ways in and out--all the properties bordering the park on Walnut Tree Hill Road, at least one private road, Antler Pine Rd, Black Bridge, River Edge - all these roads are accessible from the park.

Re: Did one of Sandy Hook shooters escape on an ATV?
But even forgetting about Black Bridge, the easiest way to come out the top end of the park, if you're headed to I-84, is to go RIGHT past the Hoaglands' house to the bridge over the Pootatuck on Walnut Tree Hill Road.

From there, your possibilities are endless. You've two ways to hit the interstate, and multiple smaller road options. You're by a bridge over both the Pootatuck and Housatonic. If you're listening to the scanner--or if some scout is doing that for you--you can easily be advised which route at that point is your best option.

And to be honest, most cops are still completely focused on 12 Dickinson Dr...not Rocky Glen.

Later on, ex-Army Ranger and current CSP officer Collin Konow does go traipsing about somewhere in a woods--could be Treadwell, but my guess is Rocky Glen due to its dense cover, and the fact that dogs were leading in that direction. They could have guys in both, of course.

In fact, in exiting the school via the woods behind the school, you could probably just stick to the Hoagland's side of the river--less cover, but faster travel. That would definitely send you within earshot of the Hoaglands' friend and neighbor (R.I.P.) on Maple, too, and if indeed she was home, sick, she could easily be the witness in question (or both of them).

BUT - that's only one theory.

There's definitely still an argument to be made for factoring in the time officers spent at 7 Washington, and proposing an ATV dropoff/van pickup at that location.

Re: Did one of Sandy Hook shooters escape on an ATV?
There is a significant strategic advantage to getting across the Pootatuck. There only so many points at which to cross--this would slow down a chase considerably.

Cops are on foot or driving--you are at a distinct advantage on ATV if you head for the hills.

If you look at the the back of Sandy Hook School, an ATV could head just a few feet through the woods and immediately hit the driveway running from the labyrinth house to 7 Washington--and straight to the Church Hill Rd bridge. Then punch into the park.

Re: Did one of Sandy Hook shooters escape on an ATV?
I want to bump this thread due to Robert Hoaglands continued disappearance.

Looking over the Newtown map I did notice trails going through the woods in the area between the school, Treadwell park and Riverside and Philo Curtis Roads.

In fact, you can easily make out on the 2007 color map or the 2002 B&W map where ATVs have been running though the woods and crossing the swampy parts.

Find the baseball diamond to the east of the school then keep going East - you'll see the trails. They are well worn from years of use.

One of them is very distinct and can be followed to 48 Riverside drive which belongs to a Mark Reid. The trails do go all over so it would have been easy to disappear in those woods and pop out anywhere on Riverside or Philo Curtis they wanted to.

The maps can take a little while to learn to use, scroll wheel to zoom in and out and hold left click to move across the map. Single left click will give you the owner information and you can get a bird's eye view that rotates 360 degrees.

Appreciate that map!

I certainly don't doubt the idea that one of the shooters could have headed in the Treadwell direction.

The fact that Roig's phone seems to have pinged at a halfway point to Rocky Glen, though (in a different direction altogether from Treadwell) keeps me looking for at least one shooter going that way. Well, that and fact that Rocky Glen is clearly a good choice, being much bigger, denser, and having relatively few access points on the school side of the property.

I would have made good sense for those fleeing to run between 6 Riverside and 10 Riverside (Apex Glass), because directly across Riverside at that point is a patch of woods--the only immediate point in that section of Riverside, in fact, where that is true.

[link to oi39.tinypic.com]

The main risk then (after crossing Riverside), is hanging by the big tree marked with an X, and waiting for the right moment to get to the bridge:

At this point into the Sandy Hook investigation by GLP, I usually mark the importance of an issue by shill response time and overall amount of shilling.

That being said, Robert Hoagland definitely knew things he wasn't supposed to know. And there was definitely a second, or more shooters escaping via woods (I say shooter, in actuality it could just be conspirators to a non-shooting)

The civilian walking her search-trained dog said that after he alerted, he started digging frantically under a log on whatever property they were walking in. She stated that the property had been "used in the past" as a way to escape the area--something to that effect.

Just wondering what the dog was digging for.

Note passenger's side not passenger side.

This wording implies there was a passenger.

That same statement, give by CSP Sgt Cario and others to the Courant, says multiple children were removed by Cario and his men from Room 8 and taken to Danbury in police cruisers.
