One of my dogs killed a raccoon this morning.
I'm up before it gets light out and let my dogs outside to pea every morning. My younger dog had a little bit of blood on two of her paws when she came back in.

This morning after it got light out. I discovered there was a dead animal in the backyard. At first I thought it was a cat. After coming back in the house to get a trash bag and then getting closer to take care of it, I discovered it was a raccoon.

After talking to the vet, good news is no reports of rabid raccoons in my area for some time.

Called the state health dept and my hubby is taking the raccoons body to get it tested. If he gets it there by 11:00 AM the test will be done today.

I have checked my dogs' body to make sure she has no cuts, bite's or wounds of any kind. She doesn't have any.

I really hope & pray the rabies test comes back neg.

If you have been vaccinating them against rabies, they should be fine.

Only 80% of the time. The rabies vaccine, like any vaccine or treatment, isn't perfect.

Good luck OP, for you and your furbabies.

Overreact much? The coon wasn't out in the day, the dog has no cuts and is probably vaccinated...

But best to keep your pets on a leash since you can't control them.

I live in a rural area. My backyard is almost an acre and has chain link fence all around.

This is the first time one of my dog's has ever killed another animal.

Darn it, I didn't proof read. It should be pee not pea. I'll give you good karma for catching my spelling error.

She would not have to have been bitten or scratched for as rabid animal to infect her. Have you not had your dog inoculated against rabies?

You're lucky, it's usually the other way around unless the raccoon was very young or sick

It happens. Dogs are natural predators. Just be glad it wasn't the neighbor's beloved kitty, cuz that can happen, too. Nothing to freak out over, I'd say.

Thats what I was thinking.Had to be small or weak for the dog to kill it.May have already been dead.I doubt a dog could kill a healthy coon and have no battle scars.

Yes, the dog has had a rabies shot.

It's possible the raccoon could have already been dead. If that's the case the only thing I can come up with is maybe it got hit by a car then crawled over the fence to die.

Good news so far it's been 15 years since there has been a reported case of rabies found in a raccoon in my state.

Re: One of my dogs killed a raccoon this morning.
feral dogs kill most of the wild raccoons.

Raccoons only live on average 2 years in the wild, but they would live 20 years as a pet.

We treat the wildlife in this country horribly, we should be ashamed. Plus raccoons are so much more like little people than dogs. they will sometimes walk a ways upright, they have little hands they use just like a person.
