The colors of the big ones really light up the sky. The kids were yelling out the colors they were seeing. Even my 20yr old was excited. What a great time with family :)

Haven't seen any yet.

Saw a bunch this morning before twilight while waiting to hunt for ISON. One left a short-lived smoke trail behind it which remained faintly illuminated for a second or so after the meteor itself burned out.

Went out from 4 - 5 a.m. to a dark area, and saw about 40 of them in an hour. 3 were nice sized and left a little trail.

Nice thread Hugh, saw a couple early this am
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

I believe the actual peak is approximately 3 PM Eastern Daylight Time (19:00 Universal Time), so the radars should be active all day today and into the evening again.

If you're fortunate enough to see a bolide (fireball) as bright as Venus or the Moon, please report it to the American Meteor Society's Report-A-Fireball service.

You can check out the latest reports and sightings from the AMS homepage.

Question. Is it normal for a meteor to look like it hit something in mid-air and bounce off?

Skywatchers readying for cosmic light show from meteor shower
Aug 9, 2013
The imminent Perseid meteor shower, the brightest and showiest of such events, could bring a light show of as many as 70 shooting stars an hour, experts say.
Sunday night into early Monday and again Monday night into early Tuesday will be the best times to see the annual meteor shower, they said.
A cloud of comet dust annually brings this shower, among the brightest and most reliable for sky watchers.
"The Perseids are the good ones," meteorite expert Bill Cooke of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., told USA Today.

Perseid Meteor Shower Is Peaking Now: How to Watch
The annual Perseid meteor shower created by leftover bits of a comet is at its best in the night sky now, but there are a few tips to keep in mind to make the most the cosmic fireworks show.
snip:
If bad weather spoils your Perseids viewing, don't fret. You can also watch the meteor display online tonight in two free webcasts. You can watch the Perseid meteor shower webcasts live on SPACE.com, courtesy of NASA and the Slooh Space
Beginning at nightfall, NASA's all-sky camera at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will offer a live view of the night sky and any meteors that flare up overhead. The webcast caught 14 Perseid meteors during its first night on Saturday (Aug. 10), MSFC officials said.

Will they be visible again tonight?

I got myself all comfy with my camera around 1am this morning but the fucking cloud came in.

Some sights are saying tonight should give a good show too but I would rather hear it from the experts here before I do a late night.

Any time after dark. Just lie back and look up. The meteors enter the atmosphere from a 'radiant' point in Perseus which rises in the Northeast about 11 PM local time. However, they can shoot across the sky in all directions and may be seen anytime after dark. I hope you see some good ones!

Yep, tonight should be good for meteors again. Hopefully you have a camera on a tripod with an open shutter setting. If you see a meteor trail then click the shutter closed. On pics you'll notice the circular star trails (caused by the Earth's rotation) with the meteors slashing across them. Best of luck.

Here's today's updated photo gallery of Perseid Meteors:

Strangely, I don't see the customary star trails in these pics. I guess my technique is 'old-school', haha.

Thanks for coming back to me. Much appreciated.

I have a camera only with a 60 second open shutter speed and f2.5 aperture, set it to about 400 ISO. There's light pollution which sucks but should be able to get average pics. I might take a drive out into the hills though.

I could layer some pics though to get the full circular effects?

There are a number of ways you can get your camera to track the motion of the stars. You can build a "barn door" type tracker for pennies ( [link to en.wikipedia.org] ), you can mount your camera "piggyback" onto a polar aligned telescope with a tracking device, or you can even buy a dedicated camera mount designed to track the motion of the stars ( [link to www.hayneedle.com] ).

I have a 10" Dobsonian Skywatcher scope but it doesn't have the tracking unfortunately. I'm quite new to it all so wanted to hone my skills manually first.
