EU Panel: Aspartame Poses No Cancer Risk

Sat May 6, 4:14 AM ET

ROME - The popular diet sweetener aspartame won another round in the safety debate when a European panel of scientists said Friday there's no sign it raises the risk of cancer.

An Italian study last year wrongly concluded the sugar substitute led to higher rates of lymphoma and leukemia in rats, said the experts who advise the European Food Safety Authority.

"There is no reason ... to undertake any further extensive review of the safety of aspartame," said Iona Pratt, a toxicologist who headed the panel.

The findings support a large U.S. federal study released last month, which found no link to cancer in a study of aspartame use among more than half a million Americans.

The new review of its potential health risks found that the number of tumors in rats did not increase in relation to the dosage of aspartame fed to the animals. Many of the rats in the study had suffered from chronic respiratory disease and the panel said that was the most likely cause of the tumors.

The study merely showed no risk of cancer. That does not prove it is generally safe. There is a great deal of evidence indicating that it is a neurotoxin with MANY ill-effects. One study for one type of effect proves diddly.

There are a lot of things which don't cause cancer but are deadly none the less. Cancer is only one of the many ways to die.....

I don't think any study will ever be able to PROVE safety. Ther will -- given enough studies -- be either a preponderance of evidence supporting or denying a hypothesis.

I personally have been using aspartame as a sugar substitute for ten years, as has my wife. My weight id dow3n a bit, as is my bnlood pressure and cholesterol levels. That's not "proof" one way or the other, just evidewnce (for me) that Aspartame is okay (for me).

You may disagree with me and choose not to use aspartame. No problem.

What I do have a problem with, though, is the government telling us what we can or cannot put into our bodies. I think most of us are smart enough to be able to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of red meat, cigarettes, aspartame, alcohol, twinkies, and roast rutbagas; and should be allowed the freedom to choose.

it is cumulative in the brain and body.

It can mimic MS.

Cause serious vision problems and numerous other maladies.

STATEMENT OF H. J. ROBERTS, M.D., CONCERNING THE USE OF PRODUCTS CONTAINING ASPARTAME(NUTRASWEET) BY PERSONS WITH DIABETES AND HYPOGLYCEMIA.

I have treated many patients with diabetes mellitus and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in my capacity as a Board-certified internist and an endocrinologist (member of the Endocrine Society). Since both groups should abstain from sugar, I initially rejoiced that these persons had an acceptable and presumable safe sugar substitute in aspartame.

Unfortunately, many patients in my practice, and others seen in consultation, developed serious metabolic, neurologic and other complications that could be specifically attributed to using aspartame products. This was evidenced by: *The loss of diabetic control, the intensification of hypoglycemia, the occurrence of presumed insulin reactions (including convulsions) that proved to be aspartame reactions, and the precipitation, aggravation or simulation of diabetic complications (especially impaired vision and neuropathy) while using these products. *Dramatic improvement of such features after avoiding aspartame, AND the prompt predictable recurrence of these problems when the patient resumed use of aspartame products, knowingly or inadvertently.

I have cited many instances of severe complications in patients with diabetes and hypoglycemia caused by the use of aspartame products in my books and scientific articles. Here are few illustrations.

Re: Europe Study: Aspartame is safe
It's safe?? Well that's funny, because the article says the study was to determine whether it causes cancer in rats, NOT WHETHER OR NOT IT'S "SAFE".

Very bold rewording on the title.

I found this in reference to the effects of aspartame:

"According to independent trials, aspartame intake is shown by animal studies to alter brain chemicals
affecting behavior."

If they do not cause tumors, but instead alter behaviour, then are they still safe?

Thanks for the link dude.
Here is parts 2 and 3
[link to users.westnet.gr]

I am sending these links to the local Victorian Health Minister [Australia]
The government is banning drinks containing sugar from schools claiming an obesity crisis among children due to the calorific content of sugar softdrink.
I surmise this is part of the NWO plot,of which Australia is a stepping post,to further poison our children, under the guise of 'reducing childhood obesity'.

I travel daily on a long articulated tram,
usually carrying about 50 kids to school.
Being a keen observer rarely do I see fat kids. The ratio is much the same when I went to school in the 60s and 70s.

When I heard the news that schools were banning sugar drinks,my alarm bells went off.I forwarded comprehensive info about aspartame hazards to the appropriate politicians, but typically no response or acknowledgment.
I am very persistent and being a parent I will be relentless in pushing this issue with them.

Rocketrod says:

"Check out Dr. Betty Martini's site..."

Betty Martini is not a doctor; as a matter of fact, she may not even exist:

"Mrs. Betty Martini
"Mission Possible International"

Nancy Markle: No one has come forward to claim being this person. Someone found a copy of an Email Mrs. Martini had sent to a group of doctors following the 1995 World Environmental Conference. That copy had been modified, combined with other information, and posted overseas. It was recently "found" and posted it to a list, and wound up being cross-posted to hundreds of lists. To a growing number of aspartame victims who are now learning WHY they have been having medical problems that their doctors can not cure... this person is quickly becoming a "SAINT".

[link to www.dorway.com]

The two people I check with (besides my wife, an RN of 30 years' experience) are two guys I play in a band with; one is a pediatrician, the other an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist.

And by the way, they are both grads of the Univesity of Arizona Medical School, which means they studied under Andy Weil, who is not exactly an AMA stooge!!

They both say that there are problems with aspartame, just as there are with a lot of other stuff, like monosodium glutemate and A-1 Sauce; but the benefits are thought by most people to outweigh the dangers -- and they both use aspartame themselves and for their families.

Again, I'm not trying to play Nutrition Nazi and tell you what you may or may not put into your body; I'm assuming that, as a competent adult, you can make those decisions for yourself.

But I have the same right to medicate myself -- or not -- that you do.

You follow the advice of people you trust, and I will do the same.

Re: Europe Study: Aspartame is safe
Aspartame found FDA aproval at the "leadership" of Donald Rumsfeld as he was then CEO of Searle:

"It was under Rumsfeld that Searle got FDA approval for the controversial artificial sweetener, aspartame, which it marketed as NutraSweet. Some believe that the approval of aspartame was influenced by conflict of interest and that persons involved in the aspartame approval process were rewarded with high paying jobs or consulting positions."
