Torrential Rains Shuts Down Capital of the Philippines
Torrential rains brought the Philippine capital to a standstill Monday, submerging some areas in waist-deep floodwaters and making streets impassable to vehicles while thousands of people across coastal and mountainous northern regions fled to emergency shelters.

The national disaster agency and local officials reported at least two dead and several missing. Schools, offices, the stock exchange, courts and embassies were closed as the weather bureau placed metropolitan Manila — a sprawling area of 12 million people — under red alert.

My sympathies. Maybe no doom there, but Manila is still the most densely populated city in the world and a real shit hole apart from a few blocks in Makati and Global City. And when it does flood, which is often during monsoon season, the rubbish and stench become even worse as raw sewage pours through the streets and paralyses traffic.

Rivers were sufficiently dredged.

Doom called off.

But the flood alarms went off by the river.

Children were happy schools were suspended.

I just came from a meeting and the streets were clear!

If by "Pakilands" you mean "Pakistan" - no, that's not the overpopulation problem in Manila. The problem with Manila is that it's Catholic, every sperm is sacred, and filipinos have overrun Manila. If you ever go there, you will see how many kids there are running around and playing in the filth, even on school days.

I can't think of any Asian capitals that are more of a shithole than Manila, and it all starts with the decrepit airport. I honestly feel sorry for people who have to live there, particularly when it rains and floods.

Auto correct is a pain.

It should read:

God will cleanse the Philippines to make way for the prophecy to be fulfilled. Some parts of Philippines will receive much worse expect earthquakes to hit the lower Islands in future near Mindanao and Davao, expect eruptions from volcanoes and greater storms in future in both manila areas and the Cebu and Mindanao areas. The righteous shall remain standing but they with wicked in hearts shall be cleansed away by nature and sickness, some less wicked will be given opportunity to repent the Philippines is were the beginning of cleansing begins.

Cognitive Dissonance.

The people closest to the situation cannot see the problem.

There are multiple videos online of people walking through water up to their knees on main, heavily populated streets.

Guess what? That's NOT normal or acceptable.

But, all is fine... right?

Back to work? Back to school?

Wow.

Yes, it's true. I was past Citibank in Manila not long ago and there were multiple armed guards out front, one with what appeared to be an M-16. But that's not unusual for Manila. Even 7-11 and McDonalds will have armed guards with shotguns out front. It's a very poor and violent place and you need to watch your ass if you go out at night. That is, unless you are in an area like Makati, which is for the elite and privileged few and security is OK.

Sorry to hurt your feelings, but as you well know from being there, there are plenty of transexual prostitutes roaming the streets of Manila, including Burgos Street in Makati. There are also plenty of places in Europe with transsexual hookers, and that does not make them a dump. And there are plenty of dirtbag looking sex tourists in Manila as well.

By any measure, Manila is a far more poor and less developed city than Bangkok. It does in fact smell like a shit hole when it rains heavily, because the streets flood with sewage and the whole place becomes a cesspool.

It is a place that is mired in corruption and greed, and I can tell you from doing business in both places, Manila has a huge edge over BKK with corruption.

Culture? What cultural attractions are there to see in Manila after you have seen Intrmuros in an hour or two? Apparently tourist attractions are high on your list and if you can get past the sexual ones that you reference with apparent knowledge, why would anyone want to go to Manila?

And I definitely agree with the earlier poster who mentioned NAIA airport in Manila. What a dilapidated dump. Just one more reason that I am very happy when I have left the dump of an airport and a city and board my flight out.

And let's not get into filipino "cuisine". I just had lunch.

And again, I do agree with an earlier poster - I do sympathise with anyone who has to live there, both the millions of poor living in filth and abject poverty, as well as any expats who are unfortunate enough to have to live there in the middle of it.
