Faraday Shields And Securing Your Electronics From The Government

A Little Background:

Over the weekend, I traveled back to my hometown (DFW) to visit my parents and celebrate a birthday for a good friend of mine before classes started back up at the university which I attend. On Saturday evening, while celebrating my friend’s birthday, I was reintroduced to a guy I had met 2 years ago at SMU who was finishing up his masters in computer science at the ripe and impressive age of 20. I remember vividly the conversation we had because it inspired me to build my new computer, and I was so astounded at how successful and smart this guy was. In that conversation, he also mentioned that he was a pretty good hacker and a member of a hacking club who competed in various conferences throughout the United States. Needless to say, he sorta stuck in my memory and I instantly remembered him when i saw him. This is an account of the conversation that we had which inspired me to write this post, and hopefully help my fellow GLPers to secure their electronics from the tyrannical and blasphemous government, which seems to be running the country which I dearly love.

And in light of a ever growing list of abuses by the NSA, presented to the public through theatrics and rehearsed talking points, I think it is entirely appropriate.

The Conversation:

During a more dull moment of the evening, while knocking back a Shiner family pack, I initiated a conversation with the guy (now 22), which I had previously met 2 years ago. I cannot say as I did not have a motive for the conversation since I am an avid GLPer, and while shy in making posts and commenting, I am always checking GLP because I truly care about what is going on in this world and this website seems to be the only truth I can find.

I started by asking how he was doing and what accomplishments he has achieved since finishing up school and so on…

He proceeded to tell me that he had been consulting for companies as what I would call (as non hacker), a good hack. From my understanding, he finds weaknesses and informs the company, for a hefty fee I imagine, from the bottles and cigars he brought to the party.

This kind of information was right up my alley, so through small talk, I gradually dropped the NSA and implied how disgusted I am at the revelations that have come out.

To my surprise, he retorted with equal disgust, and after a lengthy conversation about current affairs, I pressed the subject on how to stop the nefarious snooping by our federal government.

He informed me as follows:

“Recently, I was at a conference, doing a hacking competition and what not, and their was this guy from the secret service doing this presentation. He was going over a sort of case study involving the hacking and seizure of evidence from phones, and how when they actually get the physical cellular device, while the suspect is waiting for court, they must place it in a Faraday Field/Cage because no data that is sent to the phone after seizure can be used in court and I believe could compromise it legally if it did. And so to prevent this, they place it in that cage, and it blocks all (from what I am assuming, electronic, cellular) waves from getting to the phone/ laptop/ etc.”

This blew my mind...what I was hearing instantly made me think of homemade protection from any type of surveillance. I asked SPECIFICALLY if they would be able to access any electronic device, either by listening to conversations while not in use, accessing texts, etc if it were placed in this Faraday cage.

He said, “Absolutely not. Nothing can get in, or out, for that matter”

Of course, then I asked how it was achieved. And i assumed that it would be much too expensive and/ or technical for any “normal” person to do.

To my surprise, He laughed and was like “No man, it surprisingly simple. All they use is some BRASS MESH padding the walls/ and or outside of a metal box or container and it is absolutely inaccessible.”

After that followed continued small talk, but I will not suffer you to read it.

HOWEVER, I instantly thought of you GLP. I know that I will be doing research to try to back up what he has said, and trying to construct one of these to secure my electronics, but I urge you to do the same in some form or fashion.

Many of my family members swore an oath to protect this country against all enemies, foreign AND domestic, and I know yours have too. Our government and it’s agencies have overstepped their Constitutional bounds, and it is our duty as citizens, ordained by the Constitution and our Bill of Rights, to take protest to the atrocities in which they have committed.

I am not here to stir the pot. Far from it. But I am telling my fellow citizens and GLPers to protest these bastards by not letting them have the right to your personal information/ data.

I know this is a word of mouth conversation, so no uncle/ tard comments necessary. I just wanted to pass on information to try to help my friends out on this great online community.

JUST REMEMBER...NO MAN OR GOVERNMENT IN HISTORY HAS HAD THE ABILITY TO BE A FLY ON THE WALL, TO LISTEN TO YOUR PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS. IT IS AN OUTRAGE AND IT IS A BLASPHEMOUS ABILITY, AS WAS THE SELFISHNESS OF THE TOWER OF BABEL TO THE KING OF KINGS.

Sorry to bring religion up. But the comparison is spot on.
