mixed race = no identity?
my friend who is mixed race (black mother, white father) is one of those rare cases. generally speaking white genes are recessive but in his case his mother's genes were the recessive ones and his father's the dominant ones - dunno if i'm saying it right or i'm even correct. he does not look remotely black and looks very white, not 100% maybe 98% but he definitely has the european features and the white skin and is also quite good looking (not better than me thoughcool2). and i'm not even talking about really light skinned mulattoes with light hair and light eyes where when you see them, you could say "that's a mulatto". no I mean full blown white. even whiter looking than that prison break guy wentworth miller who has an african american father if i'm correct

we were discussing the subject of race with some other buddies. when racial identity came up, my friend said he does know not what to identify with. again he is very much white and loves european culture and stuff yet he can't make his mind up. he doesn't really care either way

what are your thoughts on mixed race identity

many mixed race people are proud of their multiracial background, yet many many others are experiencing an identity crisis or simply do not care

is it important anymore to have racial background to be proud of? I kinda say no but also yes. many of my mixed race facebook buddies say they don't identify with anything and that they feel pretty empty...

Re: mixed race = no identity?
most mixed race people have an identity crises.
they dont know who to identify with.
usually they say stuff like "we are all part of human race" and ignore races.
they tend to be more liberal and very sensitive to the race topic. they will often call homogenous race who have pride as racist.

my problem with mixed race people is that they simply CAN NOT understand or comprehend that someone can be proud of their homogenous race.

I have a multicultural background. I indentify myself on how I look. I look black, so I go by black. Since your friend is biracial and looks white, he's white. It really depends on your features too. I have a mixture of Negroid and Mongloid features. Since your friend looks more Caucaziod in the face , then he should call himself Caucasian .

It can be difficult sometimes.

i agree with that

in the case of my friend though, he is the last person who would say disneyland stuff like "we're all humans". he is the first to bring up differences between races. he's a racial realist i think is what you call it, but not in a supremacist kind of way, of course. he tends to speak very objectively about such topics. he does it all the time. also he hates liberalism and admires people who are single race and proud (provided they're not supremacists of course). maybe this is why?

that's what bothers him so much. he doesn't really care and never really thinks about it but whenever it does come up in a discussion he'll say he doesn't know what he is

thank you for your input

yes it is difficult. there does tend to be the popular notion that mixed race people who are white and black and look black/brown/light brown will identify as black. obama is more white (genetically speaking) than black yet everyone calls him black, because that's what he looks like

while i've never ever seen a white looking mulatto who will identify as white

Re: mixed race = no identity?
Why must be categorize ourself as a race?
Should be just be called "hUMANS"?

Like applications ask for it, its like racism.
If a black person applied, he could instantly dismiss
it if he was a kkk member.

I'm half Indian & half white, but since I look 99% white and was raised in a white country, I have always identified with white people. In my experience it mostly depends on the culture you were brought up around. Had I been raised in India I would probably identify with Indian people.

Re: mixed race = no identity?
Race identity would be fine if people were educated and not bigots, the world will not change much until we have mixed our genes over a few hundred maybe few thousand more years and there is not much distinction any more between the races. Sad but true.....

Its not important if you recontextualize fear and shame. then there is no need for pride.

Pride is only possible when you think you are better then someone else. This always leads to moronic and angry thoughts towards others(prime example is this board)

So he should choose courage to accept what he was, is and will be.

culture is mainly the past. blacks are black and whites are white cause of the natural circumstances they lived in for millenia(espacially the sun influence).

a white identity?
what is it?
i mean, europe could be called homeland of the blond albinos and a larger area is supposedly the homeland of caucasian people.
but actually we are all diffent. one can identify with the celtics for instance or with the phoenicians, with slavonics, germans etc. there are similarities, but not a single identity.
same goes with 'black'.

originally, that is. in america. there you have a 'white' identity and a 'black' one... but only in your head. they are not real...

there is no point in identifying with a group of people.
the point is understanding you ancestors.
the point is getting in contact with your ancestors...

I'm white, and my wife is black. Our daughters favor me in their faces (it looks better on them), but their hair is pincurl-sized natural ringlets, and their color is right in the middle, El Greco Bronze, according to those paint-matching cards at Home Depot. We're raising them to be who they are first and foremost. What other people think is up to them.

Go with facial bone structure.

If you can't identify which race based on facial bones ... make up a category and put them in that group.
