WASHINGTON - The U.S. government sued on Thursday to keep Texas from carrying out a voter identification requirement enacted in 2011, setting up a new battle between the Obama administration and a state that is a conservative stronghold.

The Justice Department said in a suit filed in U.S. District Court in Corpus Christi that Texas state lawmakers passed the requirement to deny racial minorities the right to vote and, unlike other states with similar laws, failed to take steps to prevent the law from being discriminatory.

A federal court in Washington blocked the Texas law in August 2012, but its ruling was undone in June when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

"We will not allow the Supreme Court's recent decision to be interpreted as open season for states to pursue measures that suppress voting rights," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement

Without naming any states, Holder, an appointee of President Barack Obama, said that the Texas lawsuit "represents the department's latest action to protect voting rights, but it will not be our last."

Sure -- you can vote here too! Get a tourist visa and come on over.

No, it's STATE law that complies with federal mandates (IDs) and no, you aren't required a Social Security number, its optional at the time of birth and you CAN opt out of having one and not having any benefits (though you still will be taxed by employers for most cases). I'm sure there is legal remedy for that too.

Voter IDs do not prevent fraud or demonstrate that your actually an American. They might as well just require passports (it would make more sense). Even that would do little if other states with huge voting fraud problems didn't follow along (like Ohio) and considering some voters vote multiple times in multiple states (more fraud), requiring ID is really pointless unless we throw out the notion that voting by secret ballot is the right way to go (which I believe it is).

Maybe require a birth certificate (or proof of citizenship) and only providing for in person voting.. none of that absentee bull-crap (save perhaps the Armed Forces, assuming their votes will actually arrive).. perhaps then an ID would make sense to validate the vote.

Here`s the thing, all of these poor rural blacks that Obama says can`t get id because of whatever stupid reason they say,have to show id to collect any kind of welfare, social security,or food stamps.You have to show id to get a job,buy beer,or drive a car.So either these black folks Obama is referring are completely self sufficient with no govt. handouts and no jobs or he`s simply trying to enable his new 30 million man voter base (illegal aliens),the ability to illegally vote in our countries elections.This is the real reason behind amnesty and advertising free food stamps south of the border,and this is why he has the border securities hands tied when it comes to arresting illegals and deporting them.The sheer amount of illegals here now and there families who will come later will add 10% to the population of the USA over night.With our economy in shambles right now is this the act of someone who has the best interest of the country at heart?Or the act of someone who wants to remain in power and forever change our country into a socialist whitey hating shit hole.
