Re: GOOD GRIEF! Where's the GOOD COFFEE?
I found out why some of it tastes like crap. My aunt told me during the last depression, they would add grounded up chick peas to the mix and try to pass it off as regular coffee.
I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing it again.flower

Costco's house brand Kirkland is strong and smooth. It's not Kona but for around $3/lb in Canada it's the best value we have found.

Re: GOOD GRIEF! Where's the GOOD COFFEE?
Ya- I know what you mean! my dad and I went to Starbucks and the the stuff tasted like burnt bean- we had to thin it with water-just crap. McDonalds actually was serving good coffee for a while , but they are cutting quality again- they recently pulled their excellent ice cream here for this icy crap----one of the last things I could afford--now with quality drop and high prices I'm not luvin' it so much :-(

Re: GOOD GRIEF! Where's the GOOD COFFEE?
I have two sources, one is the gourmet section of a Marshall's or TJ Maxx. Not always, but often they have truly gourmet and sometimes organic whole beans like Kona, Arabian and Costa Rican. Also online is excellent Minnesota company called European Roasteries. They roast their own and do it perfectly, not like StarBurnt's.

I too used to love McDonald's coffee such a bargain but is swill now.

They all now use robusta beans instead off Arabica beans, more of a bump less flavor. Caffeine is why most people drink coffee. Supply meeting demand.

Re: GOOD GRIEF! Where's the GOOD COFFEE?
Look at the content on the package carefully. There are two main varieties of coffee plant in the world: Arabica, and Robusta.

Arabica is the good stuff.

Robusta is crap.

After the Vietnam war ended, the Vietnamese government looked for exportable product to get its economy off the ground. Vast plantations of coffee were planted in the hills: plantations of Robusta.

Robusta has higher caffeine content, but lousy, rubbery flavors. It's cheaper.

When the plants matured, which took about 7 years, Vietnam flooded the market with its cheap coffee. This was around the same time as the 'International Flavors' coffees hit the market. Flavorings masked the crappy base coffee flavor, but the brew was a great caffeine hit.

Small plantation farmers around the world were devastated by the crashed coffee prices, and have largely been squeezed out of the market and off the land.

The supply of good Arabica is diminishing, and the price rising - the usual stealth inflation thanks to the Krugmans and other Keynsian flatheads of this world printing money like crazy.

If you want good coffee, look for 100% Arabica. You will pay for it. The big brands have blended in the Robusta in larger and larger ratios.

Enjoy your brew while you can. And let the sheeple of this world guzzle the Hazelnut recycled motor oil, leaving the good stuff for us that know about coffee.

Try organic coffee from a health food store.
It beats costco stuff. Not artificially flavored either.
