Well, that's the thing.. organizations such as the Freemasons emerged as secret for 2 reasons.

1. The church had dominance of the perception of knowledge
2. The church killed or oppressed anyone who thought otherwise

Many great scientists were persecuted by the church and put on house arrest as well.. therefore, secret organizations of enlightened men emerged in order to educate the masses. They were benevolent in origin. The organizations had to be secret because they undermined the authority of a totalitarian and ignorant church.

Overtime, these fraternities accomplished their goal and the church "fell from grace" so to speak. The power of intelligible men coming together for a cause was realized hence why the concept of 'knowledge is power' took on more prominence over mere force.

Another misconception. The knowledge has not been "hidden" so that it can only be enjoyed by a few. The knowledge has been encrypted in allegorical symbols in order to disguise it from people interested in destroying that knowledge. The whole point of Freemasonry is that you cannot hold anything secret that does not exist within yourself. You cannot put bounds or limits on knowledge. Freemasonry exists in the ether, the 2 pillars are the doorway from the material world, into the divine supernatural world. Simply symbolic of being conscious on the plane of crossing. If you want to apply a perspective taken from alchemy, you are to create gold out of the base metals of your lower being. You must conquer the beast within yourself to release the divine within, therefore, existing on the plane of wakefulness. Attempting to posses that is not Freemasonry. There is something that the light has which oblivion does not. Light is the anchor around which all things revolve. It is a pillar of creation because the very fabric of this universe and our material existence is dependent on it. The light cannot ever be extinguished, not even by the corrupt, because they need it just as much as the rest of us. It is possible to disguise it, but it can never be put out or hidden completely, we are all humbled under the light of creation. In an allegorical way, the truth(light) will always shine through.
