Probable narrative: Drop bombs on Syria because it is widely known as something to provoke Russia, Iran, and/or China. Since this provocation is established, a strike can be had on US soil while a good amount of US resources are over seas. Whether it be an actual attack or false flag, it will be expected and used as an excuse. yeah, the long bomber runs will negate the need to put several carriers in range of the yonkhont anti=ship missiles that are designed as one hit sink your aircraft carrier weapons.
This strategy is very telling as it would point to a knowledge by our government that Assad either has these weapons already, or more importantly the fear that Putin has already ordered Russian forces in the area to engage U.S. military assets upon an attack on their ally Assad.
