Anyone here have a memory foam mattress?

I tried one and couldn't stand it.
YES, they're comfy and squishy..

BUT...I'm all over the bed...I Have to move...hang a leg off...flip and turn.

The memory foam shit, you sink into like a life-size action figure into a mold...

i don't get what memory foam is supposed to do on a mattress. are you supposed to always lie in exactly the same position in exactly the same place?

I almost got one until I spoke to a (slutty, gay male) friend of mine who told me it's really hard to, er, have a good time on memory foam.

yes, actually it was a full size futon mattress, it was only like $150. It's 6" thick, so when I got rid of the futon I used it as a topper for a regular spring mattress. I can't even describe it.

Yep. Love it. When my partner moves in bed I don't get bounced around all over the place. Best bed ever!

I have a temper-pedic. Absolutely love it. They have several levels of soft to firm to choose from. Pricey but I don't regret it. They do have sales a few times a year. If someone tells you they don't ( happened to me ) then go to another store. Not only is it comfortable, but another highlight is that when I had a regular mattress I would get woken up every time my husband moved around. With the temper-pedic I never notice.

Well, considering that I haven't had sex in about 10 years, and then 5 years before that one episode, I'm not too concerned with that aspect, although I appreciate the heads up... lol.


For people that have used them, could you tell me if it's OK to just go ahead and use the box spring currently under my mattress, as long as it is in like-new condition? If I can just go that route, it would be more convenient (and cheaper) than having to buy (or construct) a platform for the Memory foam mattress.

As it stands now, I have lower back problems, and I toss and turn a LOT during an average night. Probably shift positions a hundred times a night. I'm thinking that maybe the memory foam will be more comfortable, with less tossing and turning.

But... I don't really know, which is why I am asking for people who have experience with these.

Ditto, I tried one and the same thing, you sink into it and can't move, Plus, I found it made me sweat, there's no air circulating inside as with a normal mattress.

I'd rather sleep on the floor to be honest.

Love it to sleep on. The best ever, but, you can NOT have sex on it. In any position- EVER.

Just forget about the sex or invest in a nice sex swing...

P.S. - I don't want a memory foam "topper" to put on top of my mattress, but instead, a full memory foam mattress. I'm guessing the full 12" thick variety. I would like to put this directly on top of my current box spring, and just get rid of the spring filled mattress.

You can put it on whatever you want. But i was told temper-pedic wouldn't honor the warranty ( I can't recall how long...maybe a 10 year?) if you don't use their box spring. I just asked my husband and he thinks the box spring was included...that we did not have to pay extra. Hope that helps.

i reckon that different brands will give different results,
but they do hold your body heat. you will be warmer and
possibly sweaty on one.

i sleep on a 4" topper on a solid base. it is very soft to me,
because i slept for decades on a real futon.

Bought a serta cool gel memory foam . Could not stand the smell or get used to the feel of sleeping on it . Sent it back and got a pure latex and couldn't be happier .

All the foam mattresses I've looked at so far, do not come with a box spring. Just the mattress. That's why I'd really like to be able to use my own box spring, which is in perfect condition.

Just didn't really know if they were compatible with each other.

Had a spinal fusion years ago and until I got a memory foam I never realized I never really went to a deep REM sleep. It has helped me to do that and I needed less sleep to feel just as refreshed. I used to constantly wake up but don't now. It has been very good for me. But you need to get one with the extras. Don't skimp on the place where you spent 1/3 of your life to be able to do the other 2/3. Hope that helps for one opinion also with a history of back problems.

They are super comfy

Gel is only one type of memory foam to offset the heat in the mattress . Memory foam is manmade , latex is a natural source .

I'm sure this is true..different brands give different results. I get really cold when I am tired. Mine feels cool when you first lay on it but warms to your body heat..so I appreciate that. My husband was worried cause we read reviews online of people 'sweating'. He's the opposite of me and hasn't had any issues. Ours did have a smell from the plastic wrapping when we first got it. I think it was 2 or 3 days before it went away.

It really is an individual preference thing . You really have to go out and try myriads of mattresses to find what you like because many good ones are not cheap .

That is one of my major issues, that I do not get nearly enough deep REM sleep. In fact, it seems as I am awake (or borderline awake) during the majority of the night! I never really feel refreshed, even if I sleep 10 hours! Sluggish and lethargic throughout the day. And I can tell it's because I do not sleep well, with all night tossing and turning.

What did you mean by this:

What "extras" should I be looking for? I thought that as long as I get a quality mattress, I would be OK. I didn't know there were any "extras".

I had tried the foam topper. It was comfy but not the same as the mattress. I purchased just the mattress and kept my box spring. It's been 5 years and haven't had any problems

Some places may offer a demonstration of two weeks or so, providing you pay for the cost of transporting the matress. Try ringing around to ask

I have a Tempur and would not sleep on anything else.

The only downside is in very hot weather, the mattress can get very hot underneath you, but if you put a quilt or something under you then you avoid that problem.

I think also you are supposed to have air able to circulate under the mattress.

i got the temperpedic about 10 years ago and really like it, the only mistake i made was not getting the pillow top cover for it, the foam can get a bit warm after a few hours because less air can circulate, bought the pillow top after market and have slept great since. i much prefer having sex on the foam as opposed to springs,
