For the first eight months of the year, passenger car sales in the European Union were off 5.2 per cent to 7.84 million compared with the same period last year, the European Auto Manufacturers' Association said Tuesday. That's the lowest January-August figure since the group started keeping track in 1990. The August downturn was distributed across Europe's biggest markets. Germany saw a 5.5 per cent drop, despite a stronger economy than in other members of the 17-county eurozone. Registrations fell 10.5 per cent in France, 18.3 per cent in Spain, and 6.6 per cent in Italy. here in the states also, it's not a good sign. Have not seen numbers like this since the mid 80's on fleet age. Snip; Despite booming sales of new vehicles in the past year, the average age of America's auto fleet has hit another record. The average age of all cars and trucks now stands at 11.4 years, up from 11.2 years last year, says research firm Polk. A decade ago it was 9.7 years.
