The DI WILL do every thing up to and including something that would be disgusting (taking a bite off of a cannibal's dick) to MOTIVATE Pvt. Pyle to get with the program.





DI's can ad lib anything...usually for delivery one inch from the subjects nose. It DOES get one's attention.

R. Lee Ermey I believe was an actual Gunnery Drill Instructer. Apparently when he auditioned for the role, he rattled all that speil off in front of Kubrick for 15 minutes without pause. Kubrick was so impressed, he hired him on the spot so legend has it.

I read somewhere that the actor was allowed to ad-lib most of his stuff. Also, that Kubrick cut the filming when the DI mentioned a "reacharound" to ask what it meant. He let it stand after it was explaind to him.

He was a Staff Sergeant (E-6) while active duty and retired at that rank. After his role in Full Metal Jacket he was given an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant. During the audition he basically told Kubrick his script sucked and was not at all like the real thing. R. Lee basically re-wrote the entire script using verbiage that he had used when he was an actual Drill Instructor.
