People are stupid and will live wherever.

If they really believe that a 9.0+ is coming soon, the gov'mnt should grow a pair and evacuate NOW. Why wait until disaster strikes?

Was watching some BBC program about earthquakes the other day and they thought the Cascadia Subduction zone was due to pop too.

It could happen at anytime...maybe in 100 years! Lived here all my life and they have been saying this the whole time.

It`s simple really.They know a earthquake is overdue but it could still be years away,just like the Yellowstone caldera is overdue to blow but no one knows when. They know that a massive landslide is overdue on a volcanic island in the Atlantic ocean which has in the past and will again in the near future trigger epic tsunamis along the east coast.
When you don`t know when it`ll happen you cant just stop what you`re doing and wait and wait and wait.Life must go on so you prepare the people as best you can just in case it does happen.

Isn't that like the gov'mnt playing it safe with a CYA ploy?

They're saying: "oh yeah" the Big One is coming! Read our website for details. This is serious.

On the other hand, evacuation is out of the question, apparently because they -really don't think- it's coming anytime soon.

It's a schizoid approach, IMO.

The next cascadia subduction zone earthquake will be felt
and cause damage from San Francisco all the way up to Vancouver.
It will be the worst earthquake in terms of lives lost that
north america has ever had.
It will produce a tsunami that will also kill people as
far away as Japan.
The last one happened in 1700 and the japanese documented
their deaths on paper.
It rips pretty regularly every 300 years or so.

Eastern Oregon, on the other side of the Cascade Range.

Yellowstone is NOT overdue to blow.

Logistically, evacuation is virtually impossible, because there is noplace to put all those people.

Move them inland? Hardly.

The small towns in the interior of WA, OR, CA simply do not have the infrastructure to handle the populations of those big cities, in terms of sewage, electricity, roads, etc.

There is no employment for them there, nor medical facilities like hospitals, nor schools, nor grocery stores, nor apartments.

So an evacuation would mean planning new cities, allocating the funds, and going through all the regulatory and environmental hoops required to build even a garage.

So I think their logic is to let it happen, and deal with the aftermath.

It could happen in ten minutes, ten years or 100 years.
That is "soon" when speaking of earthquakes.
People in western OR and WA should plan what to do AFTER
they hopefully survive the earthquake and tsunami.
The cities of western CA OR WA and Vancouver will be decimated.
Drive as far as you can to the east, then walk.
Keep walking east.
Get out of the disaster zone as quickly as possible.
Bridges airports roads will be gone.
Walk or ride a bike or maybe a motorcycle, but you can't carry a motorcycle and ford chest deep water, so . . .

Anyone living near or opposite a subduction zone are in danger, now think how many people that is, should they evacuate them all ?
The government are doing all they can to alert those who live in the zones of the perils, if those people choose to stay there then what can anyone do ?
Even evacuation doesn't work sometimes, everyone around Mt St Helens was told to go but a few refused to, one famous being Harry Truman who had lived there all his life and was killed from the eruption.

The truth is, any subduction could go at any time, no one knows when it will happen, if they go by the average then yes Cascadia is due, but one thing that you can't rely on is Mother Nature.

Yep, sitting in Medford right now. Nothing to worry about they hold drills every 2 years to remind the public that certain parts of Oregon are at risk of earthquakes and that a big one could happen in those areas. Op what is the point of this thread?

Yes, all of them. IMO, it's stupid to wait for something that scientists say is inevitable. Then when it happens, shake a fist at God and say "why did you let this happen??". Stupid.

The evac. should be planned and deliberate, so that noone is left in harm's way when it happens. Starting today would be dandy.

If the EQ happens 100 years from now? So what? That just means that we were ahead of the game.

Has anyone ever thought about this scenario...

Cascadia fault does what faults do and it slips...It's a given it WILL happen sometime in the future...Tsunami is generated and it pushes all that water up into the Columbia river...What happens at the Hanford Site given it is already leaking nuclear waste into the ground...
