Anyone who MIGHT FOR ANY REASON have a need to leave the US in a hurry - should get their US Passport and keep it up to date and renewed. The renewal by mail works well (normally) and can be done in a week or ten days. Rush and emergency service is available although the emergency issue service can cost you up to 500 for getting same day issuance at a passport issuing office like LA, NY or DC. I don't know if Miami still can issue passports or not. They could once but today, who knows?

For emergency issue you need:

Proof of the emergency (ie a telegram or email from an ill relative will do)
Your plane ticket (preferred) or Reservation proof if you don't have the ticket yet.
The usual proof of citizenship stuff to get a passport.
if it's just a renew of your old passport, then you'll need the old one and the right forms.

If you are in those "issuing cities" you can call, get an appointment and often get it issued while you wait. If you're not in those cities, then everything has to be fedexed in and out and of course you loose a minimum of 2 days with FEDEX best services.

If the government shuts down and they enact martial law, they aren't going to let you leave the country anyway...whether you have a passport or not! Especially if they know (and they do) that you are a GLPer!

This just dawned on me.. a friend from Russia came to visit a few weeks ago on a tourist visa.. They only needed 3 weeks but the guy stamped it up until March 2014.

We both though it was strange.. because normally, they want you out without delay

You do understand why Passports were invented don't you? SO that each nation would know who was coming into or out of their nation... just another form of Cattle Tracking.

Pretty hard to leave the country when you live in the middle of that country and only transport you have is to walk... when you walk ten miles or twenty a day.. how much can you actually take along with you?

Do that now to walk 1,000 miles.. have fun and enjoy.

Indeed, so true, most of us can't afford to leave anyway, so why bother with a passport.. if TSHT for real, there won't been many people at all left, might as well then jsut stay putting much wherever you can find shelter, food, and water... and wood, for heat and boiling water.
