Mars WILL ALTER ISON'S Orbit!
ISON will encounter Mars near directly over the north pole on Oct 1st. NASA's JPL, and indeed all orbital diagrams relied upon ]do not factor planetary encounter circumstances! And since ISON will be so close to Mars, there is sure to be orbital change, due to the gravitational effects of both bodies! The possible end result is that Mars will (gravitationally) fling ISON towards Earth!

Re: Mars WILL ALTER ISON'S Orbit!
Unlikely for several reasons!

First off, it passes Mars at a distance of around 7 Million Miles, so if its core IS only 3 miles diameter as claimed by NASA it's very unlikely to have any effect at that distance whatsoever!

However, because of its coma extending out as far as 70,000Km I would expect some electrical interaction, but even this may be only slight!

But you never know!

Don't know about the mars encounter causing ISON to hit earth, but it is rather interesting how the orbit takes it within 7m km... This type of encounter is the same thing we do with space probes to adjust their orbits.
It is, to me, sad how fast people forget the FOUNDATIONS of our fine country! This country was built by an armed population capable of fending for themselves, and will be lost by couches full of potato-sheeple riding their 52" HD-LEDTV's into the orwellian sunset. :(

"where's that damn dog whistle.." LOl.. yeah and I have these questions too.. already in the other thread..
::
Have we ever in recorded history "passed through the tail" of a comet like this before..? Also, do comets return, or are they only one time shooters, coming in and either get eaten up by the sun, or flipping a U around it, never to return..?? if they ever do come back, what the heck are they busting a U around on the other side.?? Just some Qs I had on my brain in bed last night.. thanks!

I was wondering the same thing.. and before times of GLP, and YouTube, did folks always get this bugged out about close comets/asteroids??? or are these just really rare times?

The distance of ISON to Mars is known since the very first orbit calculations.

Do you really think, astronomers are so stupid that they didn't take the approach to mars into account when they calculated the orbit?

Wrong. The java applet intended for quick preview purposes on the JPL site does not factor planetary encounters, it's just a 2 body simulation, but that does not mean "ALL orbital diagrams relied upon" fail to account for it. Just because the typical youtube ISON doomer doesn't know how to use anything more advanced than the java applet does not mean that no one else does. Indeed, JPL's HORIZONS system factors it in as do a number of programs that amateurs can run on their own computers. FindOrb and ORSA being two of my personal favorites.

Where did you get these numbers? University of YouTube?

E.g. Voyager 1 passed Jupiter at a distance of 349,000 kilometers and Saturn at 124,000 kilometers to gain speed and change the orbit.

A little difference to your 7 million kilometers, isn't it?

 Quoting: Flameworker

We dont pass through ISONs tail - We pass through ISONs debris/dust trail (the "r" makes the difference).

And yes: We passed direct through a comets tail in recorded history: 1910, Halley's Comet.

doubtful that mars will alter ison's course. mars does not possess a singular magnetic shield as does the earth but rather multiple localized magnetic muons. the strength of mars magnetic strength is a great deal to that of the earth's.
