The wide open free internet was just a bait and switch tactic to get everyone ON the damned thing so the Government can spy on you and track everything you do all that much more easily. I'm convinced the entire thing - from it's INCEPTION by DARPA, you know an offshoot of the US Department of DEFENSE - was purposely seeded into the fabric of society as the underlying infrastructure they needed installed before this Orwellian surveillance nightmare we are staring in the face today could be brought to fruition.
