Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
I see the star planet also but it has been raining and grey ever since this post was made.
I noticed it 3 months ago and to be honest it looks like it has gotten closer and bigger.
When I zoom in with telescope it looks like it has plasma all over it and changes shape. It seems to have a bit missing from the bottom so its not a full circle.
 Quoting: sas21 47669638

This will be Venus.
Yes, it's significantly closer to us now, than it was 3 months ago, and it is currently showing a phase that is only slightly more than 'Half'

And the effect you mention of changing shape, plasma, etc...
Any celestial object, when viewd low over the horizon, suffers badly from atmospheric distortions - constantly changing, due to the constantly-moving nature of our atmosphere.
Though, any experienced, regular telescope user would know that already.

This is a computer simulation from a german site of how Ison could look like in November.

Cool video on Ison! Hoffentlich Sie capricen dass diesem thread ist nicht about Ison...

Da ist etwas ins das universum und et ist nicht Ison und nicht Venus!

Wow, you are so intellectually dishonest. No, you didn't use the word fake, you used the word "shopped." Mean photoshopped. Meaning fake. Do you even have an ounce of integrity?
...

Classic projection from another anti-intellectual dishonest kook.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

there are some "shopping" tool that ENHANCE
 Quoting: SunnyDaze

That is not what you meant and you damn well know it. There is not an ounce of honesty left in you. Not an ounce.
yes, you gave me the flying V - but my gut tells me that you guys shopped those pictures - because it is more important for you to be right, than for you to find what we are looking at ... and as low as you guys stoop, it would hardly be a reach for you to deceive us by laying a transparent over some red trails, that do not look solid, at all.
 Quoting: SunnyDaze

That is an accusation of fakery, not mere "image enhancement." It is appalling to see how dishonest you are, yet you see no problem in accusing others of "stooping so low" as to lie. You are a hypocrite.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Wow, unbelievable.

This is almost a childlike self-deception.

I have a sixteen year old who has already matured past this stage. That being said, my twelve year old is squarely in it at the moment.

If you can't even be honest with yourself, how can expect anything you say to be true?

He's baaaaaaaaacccccck!

But he's obviously quite a few posts behind. He'll need some time to catch up before we get the photos and videos of contrails again. Just hope he doesn't threaten us with another webcast! LOL.

In the meantime, keep the sightings coming, folks. With 166 pages and going strong, I'd say the Bot efforts are a FAIL.

Report here: I saw a red short contrail near the horizon. It was coming towards me. Stayed in the same spot from my point of view for a few minutes. What ya'll are witnessing is the perspective when you see a contrail. My friend pointed it out to me and I looked and said its a contrail. Wait 5 minutes and it will move locations and it did. It took a while to see it moving based on the perspective it was traveling.
 Quoting: #Geomagnetic_Storm#

Report here: I am in north central indiana. I started seeing this object appear at about 7:00pm in the western sky, over a month ago. I drive home in this direction every night. I see it every night. It appears as the first visible "star" every night. First by a couple hours, it is extraordinarily bright and large. I assumed it was venus or some other planet for several weeks. I watch the sky every night, and honestly, was fooled into thinking that sirius was something weird a while back, then I got out the ipad and pointed it at it and realized it was only the star, looked up why it looked weird on the net and found out that it was because it was so low that it appeared to pulsate, I was very embarrassed about the whole situation, and so have been very tentative of thinking that something looks weird in the sky.

So, anyways, this object looks like a giant star or planet. It is very bright, and appears to kind of pulsate, and appears to be kind of an odd shape, but overall could be round, but hard to tell. It looks very strange because of how bright and large it is, and because it appears so early in the evening. As far as it's location it is south of the sunset, but relatively near it. As far as elevation, if the top of the sky is 100%, it is about 25%. When the moon is setting at about 9pm, the object is north of the moon, but also near it. I was convinced it was a planet, but knew it was very interesting or rare. So finally, I took out the ipad to look so I could just know what it was rather than speculate Venus. To my astonishment there was nothing of significance even near to the object. Mercury was in the vicinity, but way too far off of where I was pointing the ipad. I understand that the ipad app could be significantly off for some reason, but historically, when I point it at something, it is right on. In this example if the visible sky is 180 degrees, than Mercury is like 35 degrees away from this object. Again, there are no significant stars even near the object.

So, yea, I want to know what this is, and if it is an anomaly, why haven't more people been questioning it? And with NASA shutdown, I am really wondering if it is strange. This is not hard to describe because it is the first visible "star" every night. So, what is this first visible "star" right now? Why does it not appear on the star watchers ipad app? It looks nothing like a contrail, that seems like a distraction. What is it? Give me a real answer, as this is a very real object that has been in the sky in the same location for months. What is it?
 Quoting: Issius Ulmonus

To be clear, this is EXACTLY what I have been watching for months/years. AstroBoy, GeoMaggot and others can't stop NOR change this FACT. No one has even offered an explanation as to why a "contrail", "chemtrail", or EVEN Venus would be in the same "relative" position for hours, days, weeks, months or years. Until these questions are answered, I think you should trust you eyes and intelligence over the paid operatives that insist you only trust their faux science. But the choice is yours. You're describing Venus, and it has NOT remained in the "same relative position" for months or years. It has been changing over time as it orbits the sun. I've been watching it through my telescope, and the coordinates have been changing over time. You clearly haven't been watching it that closely. All you're doing is showcasing your own lack of observational prowess.

I saw this yesterday at sunset. I mean the exact same thing in the same location in the sky. I was trying to determine if it was from an airplane or a cloud but it seemed like neither. Seeing as how this video was uploaded on September 27, 2013 and I saw the same object on October 12, 2013, seems to indicate that the object may be celestial.
 Quoting: Dr. Shadow

This is what I saw on Friday October 11th, 2013, in Jackson, Mississippi, from 6:03 pm to 6:55 pm

The object was stationary, and did not move, but gradually faded as the sun set lower...

There were other jet contrails in the sky, some that were made after I noticed this one in particular, and they all faded long before this one...it did not move.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15257059

Obviously a contrail due to the motion. Compare the firts part of the video to the last and watch how much it moves.

Okay now that the flying v business is over. Here is what I have been trying to describe.

[link to www.oregonherald.com]

So it appeared to be a star at first glance. Round star-like. Then it took to this shape as time went by. Hung around in the same place though. Very different behavior from the other planes that I saw in the sky at the time. I saw it on Oct 7th. No other time. If you take a look at the image below, that was the night sky. (Strange object where saturn is supposed to be. Venus not visible yet)
[link to en.es-static.us]

Q&A:

To every person that has seen the 'object'. Are you referring to this above? Probably not.

Is it just a contrail of a slow moving jet? Probably(but mighty strange). If this is the case, I'm sorry Astro.

Is this the object to which SunnyDaze is referring? (Need Response)

Or is it the Flying V object below? (Need Response)
[link to www.bibliotecapleyades.net]

If you have been following this thread up until now. Check my posts for consistency. Compare and contrast to what others have posted. I want to nip this in the bud.. Get some real answers. On another note. From days and days of research, this has to be the most interesting account that I have found pertaining to this mysterious object:

Procedure as usual.

Just ignore them, they won´t stop trying.
Just let em do.
Enough time wasted on them.

More and more sightings incoming.
Focus on them.

Have not much time to really keep up atm.
I think if this thing gets bigger and that´s what interests me, then we´ll see it in further videomaterial.

You guys doin a great job here.
I appreciate.

this thread is being shown world wide as a lesson in the psychopathy of the govt shill and satanic drives of the abused and forgotten child. Astro and Geo exhibit profound discrepancies in personality patterns, which suggests either automated bot responses or multiple people using that particular sock puppet. I should not intrude, we do not want the subjects to be altered w/in their natural environment. It nulls the observations.

 Quoting: 3rdEyeE

Your observational powers really suck. It's not "always" visible from the same place and time. It's orbiting the sun, just like we are, faster than we are. Sometimes it's visible in the early evening, sometimes it's visible in the early morning. But right now it is visible in the early evening, it's the first "star" you can see by eye, that is what it is.
How come the space/star app isn't identifying it as Venus?
 Quoting: 3rd

Ha! Exactly my point, you have to rely on your phone to tell you what you're looking at? What ever happened to people actually learning how to navigate the sky properly? What ever happened to learning your constellations so you don't have to trust that your phone's compass is properly calibrated? I look up and know that the first star I see at night right now is Venus because I've been following its motion for years, I know its patterns, I know where to expect to see it. And when it gets dark enough I can easily see what constellation it is in. Why don't you give that kind of information, what constellation is it in?
It would great to tell adult, educated people that for the 1st time in their lives they can no longer distinguish Venus from what they are seeing now. Bottom line--average idiots have been "PROGRAMMED" say Venus anytime something is "bright" or "close".
 Quoting: 3rd

I am not an "average idiot." You have no idea who you're really dealing with.
I even heard a dad at our charity football game, blindly tell his 4 year old daughter "Look, sweetie...it's Venus." When I shared my observations with him, he said, "Oh".
 Quoting: 3rd

Blindly? He was right, and I hope he didn't fall for your bullshit. Probably just thought you were a nut. Good for that Dad for knowing his planets and where to find them.
Call me Astro..Email me Geo, I will send you pics and you can post them here and tell everyone what YOU see in the pics. Deal or No Deal?
 Quoting: 3rd

Like I'm going to give you my phone number. You really think I'm stupid, don't you? I'm not. Post the pics yourself. If you really can't figure out how to post a link to your own pictures then you need to be studying a lot more than just basic astronomy...

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
Thread: Twinkling star with red, green and white lights?

you guys should go into GLP search and post all of the threads whereby people have noticed this over the last 2 years. not only can you get a good idea of how many people, objects, and positions, you will see the same shills populating the thread trying to derail it like shills do to chemtrail threads. When they do this type of shilling, they are covering for some big secret. keep that in mind.

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
I wonder could you meet the person in your quote in real life and tell them face to face they have been totally wrong about where they saw that star every afternoon for months as easily as you can on a forum astro? "Nope I have a telescope so your eyes have been telling you a lie for months."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 5959683

I do just that from time to time at public sidewalk astronomy events. And I don't claim they're wrong "because I have a telescope," I explain what they're seeing and how it's actually moving in the sky. If I can get specific dates and times out of them I can also show them what the sky looked like at that time. If they try to tell me that Venus "hasn't moved for months," I can show them that it is indeed moving and I may use the telescope to show them that, but that does not mean they're wrong "because I have a telescope." That would be a non-sequitur.

 Quoting: Cassandra's Echo

NO ONE who is not a shill would act like this. NO ONE who is not a shill would obsess like this over someone they think is a "bot." This Cassie person HAS to be a shill!
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

LOL. Ahhhh....yes. Cassie the shill. Because I always relentlessly stalk threads that I believe are pointless and populated by crazy, misinformed people. Right.

Only a shill or a terminally unemployed person hangs around for 167 pages in a desperate effort to "convince" people of something that they obviously refuse to believe. Haven't you gotten it yet? This thread is so long because people ARE seeing something! If your efforts were succeeding, then this thread would have died long ago. Is your ego that strong or your employer so fearsome that you can't simply admit that you lost this one? You've managed to persuade people from believing a lot of things, A-boy, but on is count - THIS time - you lose. Hate to break it to you.

Good Lord, will you still be here chanting "contrails" on page 300?

I agree. Airplane contrails and occasionally Venus. I have yet to see a shred of evidence for anything else, but it is interesting to see all the excuses that come out for why it "can't" be contrails.
If your efforts were succeeding, then this thread would have died long ago.
 Quoting: Cassie

My objective is not to make the thread die, it is to find the evidence that will convince a rational person of what this really is. I find that Boxer's photos are more than sufficient for that purpose, so I call that a win.

More and more sightings incoming.
Focus on them.

 Quoting: A r c t u r u s

Yes, start with the two videos above. Watch them and tell me they aren't moving. They are clearly contrails and clearly moving. They even have a different orientation and speed. Almost like two different contrails. Shocker.
 Quoting: Setheory 22372062

They aren't moving. Now what?

Here's an idea. If you're so convinced that you're right about this contrail business, why don't you start your OWN thread and litter it with commentary, photos, videos, webcast links, whatever?

Oh, that's right. You guys already tried that, and no one showed up. LOL.

News flash for you: if your theory made sense, people would have dropped off this thread a long time ago and discounted it as b.s., like so many others on GLP. But that hasn't happened. Instead, the reports are still coming in. So either (a) you guys are dead wrong about the contrail explanation or (b) everyone reporting their accounts - even AFTER reading and discounting your contrail explanation for the past 166 pages - is functionally insane.

Regardless of whether the answer is (a) or (b), your presence here is pointless. Because it makes no sense to continue to regurgitate a bogus theory or hang out around the insane, now does it?

If you've won, then why are you still here beating the same drum?

If Boxer's photos are "sufficient", then why are people still reporting sightings?

And if you are looking to convince "rational" people, why would you possibly stalk a conspiracy website for the lunatic fringe?

Lastly, what will be your cue to vacate this thread and fold up your tent? Do we need to administer a poll of "rational" people who believe your contrail theory? If we all just say we believe you, will you leave? What will it take? Inquiring minds want to know ;-)

To the left of Venus is Antares. Al Niyat was also to the left of Venus a couple days ago, though it's now pretty much below Venus from most perspectives. I'm not sure which star you're talking about on the right. Here's an image of Venus and some of the surrounding stars from a couple days ago. The stars are labeled:

Like I said, it's entertaining and informative to see what excuses you come up with.
If Boxer's photos are "sufficient", then why are people still reporting sightings?
 Quoting: Cassie

Many people here are highly irrational. On almost any other forum filled with more rational individuals, the matter would be settled by those photos. "Sufficient" does not mean "popular" on here. That the moon occasionally looks "tilted" due to field rotation is unpopular around here and people still report "sightings" of the "tilted moon," but that does not make it any less "sufficient" as an explanation.
And if you are looking to convince "rational" people, why would you possibly stalk a conspiracy website for the lunatic fringe?
 Quoting: Cassie

Because even rational people can fall for the nonsense found here, so by learning all the details of the nonsense ahead of time I can counter it on the spot.
Lastly, what will be your cue to vacate this thread and fold up your tent?

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
...

bump

To be clear, this is EXACTLY what I have been watching for months/years. AstroBoy, GeoMaggot and others can't stop NOR change this FACT. No one has even offered an explanation as to why a "contrail", "chemtrail", or EVEN Venus would be in the same "relative" position for hours, days, weeks, months or years.
 Quoting: 3rdEyeE

You're describing Venus, and it has NOT remained in the "same relative position" for months or years. It has been changing over time as it orbits the sun. I've been watching it through my telescope, and the coordinates have been changing over time. You clearly haven't been watching it that closely. All you're doing is showcasing your own lack of observational prowess.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

No, AstroBoy...I have watched and photographed it over MONTHS and I ALWAYS know where to find it. And you are watching Venus, right? That means you are not watching what the rest of us are watching/seeing. Perhaps, that is the reason for you FAILURE.

You are right about one thing, I am not watching Venus. ROTFLMFAO!!! However, if I can watch this object from the SAME traffic light for months/years how could it be Venus?
 Quoting: 3rdEyeE

Your observational powers really suck. It's not "always" visible from the same place and time. It's orbiting the sun, just like we are, faster than we are. Sometimes it's visible in the early evening, sometimes it's visible in the early morning. But right now it is visible in the early evening, it's the first "star" you can see by eye, that is what it is.

You are describing Venus. The object of this thread is ALWAYS in the same location. You tried to swap "visible" for location, but of course even a dumb ass shill knows that NOTHING is always visible in our solar system including the Sun and the Moon. Nice try though.

Ha! WTF was that for? you are some dumb and programmed that you aren't even following the thread. It was not I, who claimed to use or need an app to find or see it. That was another person who made the same observation as others. So congrats on your tracking of Venus, now see if you can find what the rest of the eyewitnesses are consistently seeing without telescopes or sky apps.

It would great to tell adult, educated people that for the 1st time in their lives they can no longer distinguish Venus from what they are seeing now. Bottom line--average idiots have been "PROGRAMMED" to say Venus anytime something is "bright" or "close".
 Quoting: 3rd

I am not an "average idiot." You have no idea who you're really dealing with.
That is subjective. I think you are an idiot (paid or not) and I know exactly who I am dealing with. Been watching your "can't prove a negative" elementary tactics for years. ROTFLMFAO!!!!

How could you possibly know what we were looking at?

Call me Astro..Email me Geo, I will send you pics and you can post them here and tell everyone what YOU see in the pics. Deal or No Deal?
 Quoting: 3rd

Like I'm going to give you my phone number. You really think I'm stupid, don't you? I'm not. Post the pics yourself. If you really can't figure out how to post a link to your own pictures then you need to be studying a lot more than just basic astronomy...
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

No I don't think you are that stupid, just wanted to call your bitch ass out.

Btw, answer me this...I am in Atlanta, where can I find Venus tonight? How long will it be visible to me in Atlanta? What direction will I need to look? I will be at football practice on a stationary playing field from 5:30 to 8:30 pm EST.

Thanks in advance...without you tracking Venus for us, we wouldn't be able to tell the Sun from the Moon from The Winged Planet.
