I live in France and recently travelled to Tenerife in the Canary Islands located just West of Morroco to visit a friend. Tenerife has the largest solar telescope in Europe and the third in size in the world due to its assured crystal clear skies. On 15 October 2013 I witnessed a bright image in the lower Western sky after sunset and my friend told me that it is nightly feature although I must stress that he has only lived there since June 2013.
Upon my return I discovered this site and contacted my friend to request a photograph. To the visible eye it is exactly as described by others in that it appears to be an elongated vertical image.
I am no expert but simply wish to add my contribution to this topic for what it is worth. This photo was taken on 4 November 21:28 CET.

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
I finally saw it today!!!

I was in the backyard and just above the treeline the "strange" object was in the sky.

I've seen this thread a thousand times and never gave another thought, but tonight I saw it!! I told my son to look at it and he kept saying it was an airplane. Then after 15 min and staying in the same spot... we agreed it was no airplane.

I used to live in Florida and it reminded me of when space shuttles would go off. You could see a bright hazy object with a bit of a contrail. This is what it looked like, only it didn't move! Strange indeed!!

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
I have seen this thread for some time but never seen an object in the western sky until last night. The chemtrails were less than usual last night. There was a bright object in the sky. It was the only bright thing you could see in the sky. I stared at it and it appeared an oblong shaped flickering moving flashing with a thing on the right that seemed to be moving up and down and maybe flashes coming off of it? White with red bits. As i stared and stared at it it appeared to shape shift and looked like a harp at one point then went back to how it originally appeared? Its hard to explain exactly what it looked like. I had to go to the shop and when i came back to the same position of viewing and it was not there. I took a pic on my phone but it just looks like a big star or something, not exactly what i was seeing as i was looking at it.

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
It is NOT venus(you can see that clearly to the left/higher)

It is NOT mercury(can hardly be seen @ all, certainly doesn't have disc like appendage)

You can not see anything unusual with eyes only, HOWEVER with a pair of binoculars you can see a round, reddish object as bright as Venus BUT with something CLEARLY protruding from it that is disc like but open ended.

A sort of "V" shape to it... The left side appears to be more prominent. I've checked it out last two nights and can hardly believe my eyes. All articles I read state you can NOT see the rings of Saturn with just binocs; its too far for that. Plus the "V" shape part is larger then the object; it is vice versa with Saturn. I've seen saturn through a proper telescope and it was tiny, its rings even more so.

Please if you are in usa/canada or other northern latitudes, check it out, near sunset WITH binocs @ least. I can't believe this but it looks just like the images of what niburu is supposed to look like, the winged disc!!!

Craziest thing I've ever seen, right up there with hale bopp or green lightning or intense aurora action.

I am sort of willing to believe it's Saturn due to local, appearance but doesn't seem possible @ all(way too much detail for such weak/generic binoculars! It doesn't even say the mag power on them.)!!!
AND
The rings are NOT open ended
The rings are NOT more prominent then the planet/object

Again it is NOT venus, observed it shorlty later/unmistakably.
Mercury might of been the winged messanger but does NOT actually have wing/disc like appearance to it ever.

Will attempt images tomorrow.

It's not really shaped like that. The diamond shape is from the camera optics. The image is so out of focus that it takes on the shape of the camera's iris. [link to www.sony.jp]

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
So, after this humongous amount of mathematical jargon effort, your precision is within a few arc-minutes and a quarter of grade (i believe this is 15 arc minutes?) for 20+ years interval, after, if, you find some old astronomy book reference?
how exactly this calculus is more reliable than the method used by, for example stellarium, VSOP87, wich has an accuracy of 1 ARC-SECOND between 2000 BC and 6000 AD for Venus, this is, at least, 60 times more accurate than what you are doing for a far greater interval of time and is constantly updated by and for mathematicians, astronomers and planetariums all around the world since is open source?
Inquiring minds want to know...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25603040

Quarter of a degree in declination, a few arcminutes in right ascension. Not bad for calculations you can do by hand with minimal effort. It's not more accurate than VSOP87, but VSOP87 isn't something you can practically do by hand with just a pocket calculator. You seem to be missing the point here. The point is that I can show mathematically that Venus should be in Ophiuchus, you'd don't even have to rely on Stellarium which is frequently accused of being a "conspiracy." You're right; Stellarium is open source, so is VSOP87, there is no way in hell they can be "conspiracies" to hide the truth, but you can't reasonably lay out the entirety of calculations from VSOP87 line by line in a brief forum post and for the purposes of this post (naked eye observations), the accuracy achievable with a pocket calculator is good enough.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

No, apparently you are missing the point wich is, i would have to trust your (or others using the same method) simplified hand writing calculations with a precision of arc minutes (wich is by no means doubting on the integrity of the person doing it)saying, in this case venus is in ophicious...(or whatever the name of the constelation actually is)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26839165

I showed all of my work. You don't have to "trust" anything. At all. It's all verifiable. That was the point of doing it in a way that can be done on a simple hand calculator, anyone can verify every bit of it. That is the point, which you keep missing.
or a program, for example stellarium, wich say venus is in scorpio now (albeit on one extreme) with a precision of arc seconds?
 Quoting: AC

My Stellarium says Venus is in Ophiuchus, not Scorpio. See, this is why I did this; some of you people don't even know how to operate a simple astronomy program properly even when it basically does all the work for you. Thus I proved it mathematically, so it's not just an argument over who is operating the program properly and who is not. I just proved that it is in Ophiuchus, mathematically, so unless you can show where my calculations are wrong...
wich version is more reliable in your opinion in order to contrast the actual view of the sky with an estimated trjectory
 Quoting: AC

I trust my calculations over your ability to use Stellarium properly any day of the week.

Took a look at post on FB, and it seems to be the same thing that has been talked about here and many other threads lately.

"North Mississippi Storm Chasers & Spotters: Looked like an airplane with a contrail. What little sunlight that was left was barely hitting it. Didn't see any beacon lights though. Look just to the right of Venus. Taken in East Memphis, so not sure if this is the same thing or not".

Re: There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!
I have been watching this since March. It started out much smaller in the North Western sky and very low. Only stayed out about 30 min. It has gradually moved across western sky but hss moved inward so that now it is much closer to earth. This is not Venus! It changes from hexagon into blue star like image, to star like image with red background. I have video where it almost looks like a face is in the center at times among many other things. I am in So Cal, and have watched it every night since March. It is staying out longer and setting after about 1 1/2 hours now. Definitly heading our way even though not sure if it will actually hit us. There is another Huge object that has 3-4 bodies with it that comes out about 9:45 - 10:00pm in the East. This too is very bright and has objects with it.

Yup, I've seen this other bright object in the east also. I've looked at it in my telescope, and it does indeed have 4 bodies with it!

That would be Jupiter and its four largest moons - Io, Callisto, Ganymede, & Europa.
