Yeah, preservation a fairly new idea. Good thing there was intervention in the building of the Aswan Dam. Lots of stuff would have been submerged.

I also don't think it has been all that long that modern city of Rome really recognized the cultural significance of all the ruins around them.

So the person who bulldozed one of Belize's largest Pyramid did not receive money from a construction company?

Most times the destruction is done in the name of religion, because a) The religion goes against those of the conquerers and/or b) They wanted to cover up that the culture was indeed educated and cultured and instead wanted to portray them as ignorant barbarians in need of 'saving'.

In this winter of austerity and Depression-era unemployment, a fog of woodsmoke hangs over the Greek capital on cold nights.

It's coming from the tens of thousands of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves Athenians are using to heat their homes. Most can no longer afford heating oil, the price of which has risen 40 percent since last year. The government also cut a fuel subsidy for low-income families earlier this month.

Some Greeks buy cheap firewood; others used their discarded Christmas trees as kindling. The most desperate are burning old furniture and raiding protected forests. Someone even hacked away the remains of a 3,000-year-old olive tree where Plato is said to have taught.

I don't blame religion. It's tyrants that order the cause. They do it intelligently by portraying everyone not of their tribe as Barbarians, as you say.

I dont know the details of the story but do you mean that he took money to destroy the pyramid? i hardly beleive that.

Denny Grijalba who bulldozed the Pyramid recieves a salary from the Construction firm, so yes.

So if you work for a company and kill someone, I must blame the company for the murder? Not unless i have enough evidence to claim that it was an order to kill.

Anyway, we should also keep in mind that in some countries or areas, it is hard to built anything because when you dig the ground you find ancient ruins. When you find something like this in your plot you stop the construction works and call the archeaological service, which will start the digging itself and after months or so, if the site is not too important they take the findings and let you cover the rest and build what you want to build on top, or they take your plot (i guess they give you a compensation.
