75 THOUSAND Cattle dead in South Dakota Over Weekend Blizzard, BLAMED ON SHUTDOWN...
Shutdown worsens historic blizzard that killed tens of thousands of South Dakota cattle
[link to usnews.nbcnews.com]

"An unusually early and enormous snowstorm over the weekend caught South Dakota ranchers and farmers unprepared, killing tens of thousands of cattle and ravaging the state's $7 billion industry — an industry left without assistance because of the federal government shutdown.

As many as 75,000 cattle have perished since the storm slammed the western part of the state Thursday through Saturday with snowfall that set records for the entire month of October in just three days, state and industry officials said."

*EDIT* Is it just me, or does it sound like they're leveraging this disaster for political gain? More interesting tidbits from the article:

Ranchers have no one to ask for help or reimbursement. That's because Congress has yet to pass a new farm bill, which subsidizes agricultural producers.

...

And even if there were a farm bill, the government shutdown means nothing could be done under one anyway.

...

In the meantime, he said, the best farmers and ranchers can do is meticulously document their losses, with detailed photos, for use when and if claims can be processed.

...

But the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association warned that the effects would be felt for years afterward. Not only were tens of thousands of calves killed, but so were thousands more cows that would have delivered calves next year.

What the hell? I had no idea there was a blizzard in South Dakota...

I live next door in Iowa and it's just under 80 and sunny.

I know the storm that came through but it mostly missed where I'm at.

It's not just South Dakota, SW ND has thousands of dead cattle as well. Most cattle drown when they accidentally walked into ponds, creeks, and watering holes and became stuck. The pictures are horrid.

Many towns are just getting power back. This was one of the worst storms I've been thru, and I've lived here all my life.

Wow, sorry t hear this, and not even a mention on the CNN or the like?

That is a catastrophe and should garner a news mention!

I think there is some funny business going on. Weather manipulation is my guess and been pretty bad for the Midwest for the last few years.

Imagine, a successful country systematically taken apart by economic disaster, natural disaster, and social disaster. Do it all at once and people unite and repair...do it over a long period of time and you break the strength and spirits of the people and then can do just about anything you want to them.

It wasn't weather modification. Models saw this storm coming for the better part of two weeks, and it was known it would be a dynamic storm.

That's what NBC is reporting, not saying they are trustworthy, but those ARE their numbers:

Well you can start by going thru the special weather statements, winter storm warnings, blizzard warnings, storms prediction center, Winter Forecast Center, and area forecast discussions from the Rapid City NWS office and Bismarck NWS. Too start with. I am on my phone and do not want to try and link right now.

I also saw a story from accuweather on the first of october.

That all said Euro, GFS, GEM, and NAM all saw the dynamics of the storm.
