Cinder block walls, what to paint them with?
I have a property which is cinder block built, we call it here Bessa Blocks.
The paint always peels, and it always gets rising damp and moisture.
What is the best thing to paint it with?
Im not going to Render it, it survives ok with just paint.
But after 5 years it needs a new paint, this is an investment property.

You need to use a good water sealer before painting

Re: Cinder block walls, what to paint them with?
For good adhesion to concrete, first it needs to be extremely clean and dry. Then use an oil based primer like Kilz and give it 2 good coats. The use a top quality oil based paint
for your final coat(s).
If you use acrylic or latex it will only peel away once moisture gets behind it.

Im America you call it a "Cinder Block", its basically concrete block with crushed blue metal rock inside it.
Its the strongest shit.
Here we call it a "Bessa block", because Bessa Bricks are they only ones who ever made them.

There is this stuff called Kilz. Buy the stuff made for cinder blocks. That shit works as a primer/water seal. Then you can paint whatever on top of it.

Seal them and use a moisture resistant sheetrock?

Cinder blocks are so porous, paint is just going to suck it in or wear off.

Rent a pressure washer and get as much of the old paint off as possible - if you don't, it will peel where the old paint was left on.
Your other option is to "stucco" the blocks. Just Google it to see what it takes. It's not hard and actually looks better than plain cinder blocks.

Nah we don't want to sheet rock it.
Just fix it up for a bit longer than last time.

Well ive got a sand blaster, I know I can get the old paint off which is peeling.
What im looking for is some kind of new space age alien technology paint, that just slaps on and does the trick?

The problem I find with paint any paint sticking for more than 2 years to cinder blocks is.
The bloody crushed blue metal rock in it!
I can get paint to stick properly to concrete panels, that's not a drama.
Its these bloody bessa blocks aka cinder blocks!
They have this blue metal rock in them, its like metal crossed with concrete, it just doesn't work!

Re: Cinder block walls, what to paint them with?
I don't know how much it cost but to make sure moisture isn't a problem, use the water sealer that you paint to make a water liner for a fountain made out of blocks or cement. It is totally water proof, them use kluz then you paint the way you want.

You can seal it, put up insulation board, then wood strips and then sheet rock. That way you will have a better all around water proof plus warmer and cooler in the summer. You can change colors when you want!

Re: Cinder block walls, what to paint them with?
space age product is called texcoat ...

you spray it on - the color is mixed in
it works great over cement, stone, all of it ...

no paint peeling, lasts longer then you will

buy it in 5 gallon buckets, rent a sprayer and spray it on ...

You need to plaster all that shit up before any paint will effectively stay on. Paint needs a smooth, even surface. Cinder blocks are too porous and "dusty". Just plaster it the fuck up and drink a fosters, you kangaroo riding motherfucker!!!

Hey bud,

I've had many a rental in Oz from Hobart to Townsville and painted nearly all of them with the following.

After a surface pressure clean go Haymes pink primer which is oil based, high quality and sticks like mad.

Let that sit for a bit so you can then go over it with an acrylic.

The pink primer does the contact with the blocks and the acrylic sticks to the pink primer. just let the pink primer gas off a bit so as to not affect the acrylic. A couple of weeks of having a pink house should do it then hit it with the acrylic, any quality acrylic would be ok I reckon as the pink is doing the work.

Cheers.
