We had an outhouse,,,had to hand pump water, and a wood stove for heating and cooking. A few people may have had a radio, and folks would all gather at that house and listen to the war news,,,and the radio dramas / mysteries. Few people may have had a big old black car, they were always catching on fire. We took a bath once a week, starting with adults in the tub, then the kids, all in the same water except for rinsing off. We had no electric, until closer to 1950,,so there were no fans; we used hand fans on very hot days. The "ice man" would deliver a block of ice to put in the ice box, up on top and it would drain into a pan below,,,to keep the food cold...he would always give us kids a couple ice chips to chew on. The only toy I had was a little tin Planters Peanut man about 3 inches high. We played with tree leaves and stones. We had a couple crayons. Toilet paper? The old Sears catalog. Quoting: Arnie I can see how those experiences shaped you into the knowledgeable, tough lady you are today! I am definitely spoiled with all the luxuries, no question. I do hate to hear you didn't have toilet paper or more than one toy, though. That made me a little sad Arnie! My grandma used to tell me about their outhouse, no A/C, etc. She was also a tough lady! I spent my summers with her when I was growing up (she lived in OH), and even that house didn't have A/C. Probably another reason I hate the heat! But what I do appreciate so much out of that experience is that, because there was no A/C, we spent a lot of evenings outside on her awesome front porch every summer playing games, reading and listening to the baseball game on the radio. And it was a neighborhood of old homes, so some others didn't have A/C either and people would just hang out outside, which was rather nice. Newer homes anymore don't even have much of a front porch, they have a back porch because it's more private. But I love a good front porch, I really think back in the day those front porches brought people and neighborhoods together a bit more. |
