When it Comes to Gamma Radiation, the Moon is Actually Brighter Than the Sun

The eerie, hellish glow coming from the Moon may seem unreal in this image, since it’s invisible to our eyes. But instruments that detect gamma rays tell us it’s real. More than just a grainy, red picture, it’s a vivid reminder that there’s more going on than meets human eyes.

WASHINGTON MONUMENT TO REOPEN AFTER 8 YEARS OF EARTHQUAKE REPAIRS

The Washington Monument will reopen to the public on September 19 after being closed for eight years due to damage sustained in an earthquake, according to the Washington Post.

On August 23, 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the eastern seaboard of the United States, causing cracks and other damage to the 555-foot marble and granite monument, according to the National Park Service. Visitors and staff members who were in the monument at the time reported that stones and debris fell during the earthquake.

Japanese urged not to see rare fish as omen of earthquakes

People in Japan hoping to predict the next big earthquake should ignore mysterious deep-sea fish after experts said rare sightings of the creatures on the country’s beaches did not, as some had believed, foretell a seismic calamity.

University researchers said they had debunked the theory of oarfish as a harbinger of doom by comparing sightings of deep-sea fish, including those caught in fishermen’s nets, with earthquake records going back more than 90 years.

“We thought that if we could understand the connection, it would be useful for disaster prevention,” Yoshiaki Orihara of Tokai University’s Institute of Oceanic Research and Development said.

The experts, however, found no correlation between the sightings and major earthquakes.
