Felt like an explosion under my house or that something crashed into the house outside. I saw everything move. Few things fell over. I’m ready to move! It’s getting worse. Surprised there is no cracks in my walls.

THE NEXT STREAM OF SOLAR WIND: Earth is passing through a void between streams of solar wind. The next stream lies ahead. Estimated time of arrival: Aug. 20-21. The gaseous material is flowing from a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. Its grazing impact could spark geomagnetic activity just below the level of a G1-class storm.

WATCH A COMET DIVE INTO THE SUN: The solar system has one less comet. Yesterday, Aug. 15th, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) watched a comet dive toward the sun. The dirty snowball went in--but it didn't come back out again.

GIF [link to spaceweather.com]

The comet, R.I.P., was a member of the Kreutz family. Kreutz sungrazers are fragments from the breakup of a single giant comet many centuries ago. They get their name from 19th century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who studied them in detail. Several Kreutz fragments pass by the sun and disintegrate every day. Most are too small to see, but occasionally a bigger fragment like this one (~10 m to 50 m) attracts attention.

Because of their common parentage, sungrazers often come in clusters. For this reason, it wouldn't be surprising to find yet another one in the offing.

REPORT: THE WORLD’S FIRST SOLAR ROAD IS AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER

In 2016 France turned a one-kilometer stretch of roadway into the world’s first solar road. And three years later, the trial project has turned out to be an absolute disaster, French newspaper Le Monde reports.

The photovoltaic panels that made up the 2,800 square meter (just over 30,000 square feet) of road surface have deteriorated beyond recognition, according to the paper. The panels have reportedly started peeling off the road and splintering.

YELLOWSTONE WAS ROCKED BY A MAGNITUDE 7.3 EARTHQUAKE 60 YEARS AGO—AND THE SCARS ARE STILL VISIBLE TODAY

Sixty years ago the Yellowstone region was rocked by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake which killed several people and left scars on the Earth that are still visible today.

The Hebgen Lake earthquake—as it is known—occurred on August 17, 1959 at 11:37 p.m. MST in Madison Canyon, just outside the western boundary of Yellowstone National Park. It lasted for about 40 seconds, with several strong aftershocks reported later.

Six decades later, it remains the largest earthquake ever recorded in the Rocky Mountains. In fact, it was one of the strongest ever recorded in North America, comparable in power to the devastating San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

"We often hear about the potential for large volcanic eruptions of the Yellowstone volcano in the news and on television shows," Jamie Farrell, assistant research professor at the University of Utah and Chief Seismologist of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, wrote in a blog post for the United States Geological Survey (USGS.)

"However, we rarely focus on the threat of large earthquakes in the region, even though the hazard and risk from these types of events is much larger than a volcanic eruption because they happen so much more frequently," Farrell wrote.
