KickinIt User ID: 74785546 United States 12/14/2019 09:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't think I've seen this posted.. Christchurch, New Zealand, shattered by a 2011 earthquake, offers an urgent lesson for California. Eight years ago, a huge earthquake ruptured directly under Christchurch, killing 185 people. Full recovery remains elusive. The city offers an urgent lesson to California, whose major cities — situated along seismic faults — face similar threats. New Zealand and California have similar seismic safety standards, their skylines built in the 19th century with collapse-prone brick and in the 20th century with brittle concrete. Each also sits on the edge of a huge tectonic plate boundary. Neighborhoods are built on top of soft sediment that magnifies the shaking, and seismic regulations for older buildings in many areas are inadequate to resist collapse from intense shaking. Recovery from a huge quake in Southern California or the San Francisco Bay Area would be many times more challenging than in Christchurch, given the state’s huge population, housing shortage and sprawling infrastructure. InterMezzo User ID: 45716769 Netherlands 12/14/2019 09:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | And finally.... It's Friday!! Quoting: InterMezzo Enjoy your time zones everyone. Love to all! *vaporizes* Also as traumatic as it happens I was layed off from my local county government job some 9 years ago. (9 years oh my gosh) Given 2 hours to packup and get out of the office that I had worked in for 35 years. VERY TRAUMATIC situation at the time. It took a lot of work to get the retirement organized and working properly but now it is history. Thank you IM for pointing out the buddy list and messaging. I have overlooked this feature here on GLP and did not realize it's importance. I had included a number of people in the list but I didn't realize what all you can use it for.... still learning. Sorry to hear about the layoff and that whole scene my friend. I never get why companies have to be acting like that with ultimatums (some not even 5 minutes and guided out by security) in a situation where people's world is collapsing. Why be so disrespectful, especially for someone who has given their best for 35 years. I can imagine that stuck with you for quite a while. So sorry for that. But I am at least glad that you got your retirement arranged and now can look at the future again. In that respect I am privileged with social security and a secured pension funds over here in the Netherlands. And we all learn along the way, lol. It is good that we still can be amazed. ;-) Happy Weekend John! |

Had a big screen behind with lots going on there, great light and effects, really well done! 2 hour and 20 minutes, of a great production. 15 in the group, but there were 6 main ones, the rest they called their orchestra! So many instruments! Quoting: bigD111 Glad mom, you and the family had so much fun D. I had never heard of them, looked them up on YT and it is so cool! So it must have been so spectacular to be there in person. It really was! It was so nice to just sit and enjoy a really good performance! On the other hand, I am saddened by your job situation! Age discrimination is a real thing and they are absolutely missing out on a quality individual! I hear you on the performance. I like that kind of music and never heard of them. Feeling kinda like Joinca not knowing about the buddy list and message system.. sorry John! And thank you for saying that D. You are a fantastic guy yourself my friend. Things will work out. |

My new daughter-in-law was rushed to the hospital early this morning and it turns out she has a large uterine tumor...like, huge. She was rushed down to a hospital in the city where she is to have it removed. If y'all praying types would do me a solid and send one up for her that'd be great. Her name is Madi. Thanks Keeping Madi and all of you in my utmost positive thoughts and prayers Mr. S. It is a shock to read about the size, wow. Hope they are able to remove it soon and she recovers quick after that.. |
InterMezzo User ID: 45716769 Netherlands 12/14/2019 10:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I shouldn't complain to much about finances though. I know our social security system at least protects us for two years with about 70% of the pay. And I know that is not the case in a lot of situations like in the USA. And I feel bad about that for those affected. Quoting: InterMezzo He does have what we call his insurance job, UPS, and is working about 38 hours a week but even that is a 1/4 what he was making and we are blowing through savings at a mad dash. That was suppose to help use during the senior years. So far, the best offer was for 75% of his old salary for only a contract job for 6 months. You are lucky with with your backup program there. Not here in USA. He is thinking about food stamps, not sure what it is called now. Might as well get back what we put in, instead of all the illegals grabbing it up. I hear you my dear friend. So sorry about that. I know our system might be the other end, but I also know your system sucks on that. Same with Sim and her sick leave. Getting punished for being in a bad situation like unemployment or illness under the umbrella of own responsibility. How is getting sick or unemployed (in most cases) own responsibility. And in a lot of cases, it is the company situation that makes you end up in a situation like that. I don't advocate being pampered from cradle to the grave, but there should at least be some kind of governmental safety net in those situations. Hope it works out for hubby and you and the family Angel. |

joinca User ID: 76969754 United States 12/14/2019 10:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019 COSMIC RAY UPDATE: Something ironic is happening in Earth's atmosphere. Solar activity is low--very low. Yet atmospheric radiation is heading in the opposite direction. Cosmic rays percolating through the air around us are at a 5 year high. Take a look at these data gathered by cosmic ray balloons launched by Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus almost weekly since March 2015: Radiation levels have been increasing almost non-stop since the monitoring program began, with recent flights registering the highest levels of all. What's happening? The answer is "Solar Minimum"--the low point of the 11-year solar cycle. During Solar Minimum (underway now) the sun's magnetic field weakens and allows energetic particles from deep space to penetrate the Solar System. As solar activity goes down, cosmic rays go up; yin-yang. When cosmic rays hit the top of Earth's atmosphere, they produce a spray of secondary particles and photons that rain down on Earth's surface. This is what our balloons measure--the secondary spray. We use X-ray and gamma-ray detectors sensitive to energies in the range 10 keV to 20 MeV. This type of radiation, which you can also find in medical X-ray machines and airport security scanners, has increased more than 20% in the stratosphere.
