@USGSVolcanoes Hey. So um, ya probably know of the earthquake that hit in Idaho. I found out it was very close to the Challis Volcanic formation. What are the chances of the earthquake being magmatic, or a precursor to a future eruption?

response:

USGS Volcanoes
Replying to @TChristianFurry

Pretty small. It was a normal faulting event, which is related to tectonic extension of the western US. Such quakes are unfortunately pretty common in the region. Like the 1983 Borah Peak earthquake, M6.9, also in central Idaho. Volcanic quakes don't get this big.

Hey, everyone worried about the Idaho earthquake! Want to know if Yellowstone is about to erupt? Then read this evergreen article of mine.

(Spoiler alert: no it isn’t. The quake is unrelated to Yellowstone. Volcanologists are not losing their shit.)

A M6.5 earthquake just happened in Idaho this evening, northeast of Boise. [link to earthquake.usgs.gov (secure)] …
@USGS website is not showing aftershocks yet, but you should expect them. The largest aftershock to the average M6.5 is M5.3. Half have aftershocks even bigger than this

@DrLucyJones

Idaho has a history of bigger quakes. In 1983, the Borah Peak quake was M7.0. Today's quake is almost 100 miles northwest of the 1983 event.

@DrLucyJones

Idaho is part of the Basin and Range tectonic province. Everything west of the Wasatch Mtns. is getting slowly stretched out as a bit of North America tries to cling to thePacific plate

Putin, in isolation, has already signed a decree to declare a state of emergency in Russia

According to The Guardian, Vladimir Putin has already signed a decree authorizing the Russian government to declare a state of emergency in the country. In the early afternoon, the Reuters agency had already indicated that the executive was considering the decision to make room for more stringent measures.

Dozens of Russian regions, including the city of Moscow, have already implemented partial quarantines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. In the capital, as of Monday, residents are only allowed to leave home to receive urgent medical care, buy food or medicine, walk pets or dump the trash.

Russia currently has 2,777 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 24 fatalities. Vladimir Putin has been in isolation and has been working remotely since this Wednesday, after the clinical director of a Russian hospital tested positive for the coronavirus after meeting with the president.

That's so cute! I just love penguins. I may have posted this here a few days ago, but here's a video of the penguins at our local zoo going on an adventure outside their normal dwelling. It cracks me up when they get in/out of the elevator.

@stlzoo

Yesterday, our Humboldt penguins took a field trip from their outdoor habitat to inside Penguin & Puffin Coast. They got to visit the Gentoo, king & rockhopper penguins, as well as the horned & tufted puffins. There was a quick stop at the closed gift shop & the offices upstairs.
