ASTEROID FLYBY THIS THURSDAY: There's no danger of a collision. But asteroid 2020 SW will come very close to Earth on Thursday, Sept. 24th. At closest approach, the 5-meter wide space rock will be just 28,254 km above Australia and New Zealand, closer to Earth's surface than many satellites. ALL SIZZLE, NO SUNSPOT: We expected a sunspot. Instead, we have plage. French for "beach," plage is the bright magnetic froth that surrounds many big sunspots. In this case, however, there is no sunspot: [link to spaceweather.com (secure)]

This frothy network of white-hot plage is emerging over the sun's northeastern limb underneath a canopy of sizzling magnetic arches. Usually, such a canopy would herald an active sunspot group. So far, however, no dark cores are visible.

Officially, the sun remains blank and spotless for the 32nd consecutive day--a sign that Solar Minimum is still underway.

How sweet of you Granny! I do love my live shows, but honestly this pandemic hasn't bothered me as much as it has other people. I do worry about the future of live music as this goes on, particularly local music. I'm worried about the arts in general. Other than going to an art museum (which I've done), any sort of live concert, symphony, musical theater/plays will not be able to fill an auditorium for some time.

Hope you're getting your summer crops all canned/dried/frozen! Is your church friend back to 100% now?

Daughter, symphony musician, has had NO WORK since March, no gigs or mini-concerts, her flute studio students gone. Her university teaching gig, students do zoom lessons.
Previously she was so busy she had to turn down many offers.

I thought about her. All these talented people out of work. Thank goodness she has that teaching gig, who knows when the symphony will be able to play together again
