Foreshock series controls earthquake rupture
Date:
August 13, 2014
Source:
GFZ GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam, Helmholtz Centre
Summary:
A long lasting foreshock series controlled the rupture process of this year's great earthquake near Iquique in northern Chile. The earthquake was heralded by a three quarter year long foreshock series of ever increasing magnitudes culminating in a magnitude 6.7 event two weeks before the mainshock. The mainshock, which had a magnitude of 8.1. finally broke on April 1st a central piece out of the most important seismic gap along the South American subduction zone.

More Earthquakes for Chile? Seismic gap has not been closed
Source:
Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences
Summary:
After the strong earthquake that struck Chile on April 2 (CEST), numerous aftershocks, some of them of a considerable magnitude, have struck the region around Iquique. Seismologists doubt that the strong earthquake closed the local seismic gap and decreased the risk of a large earthquake. On the contrary, initial studies of the rupture process and the aftershocks show that only about a third of the vulnerable zone broke.

You are such a sweetie. Below is what was given to me over on FOG for my birth date, which I have since removed:

This is for you Whiteangel

Without even lookin at it, I felt compassion coming from you. That is the path you are on. You were born in the week of the loner, do you consider yourself one even though you're family oriented? Just reading yours makes me agree with it by reading your posts here for so long!

"Pisces 2 souls on the Path of Compassion may find that their struggles center around issues of basic connection and socialization. Those born in the week of the loner do no take to others easily and can be downright timid when it comes to joining forces for a common cause. Relationships will have to be formed and re-formed with considerable regularity here, as Pisces 2's believe on some level that they can figure out the secrets of social interaction and commitment without necessarily having to participate. How the world works can become a major preoccupation for them. Still, they are highly intelligent and crave being able to communicate their ideas. If they are careful to devote their energies to concrete concerns and socially stable professions and institutions, the good Pisces 2's can do for others is considerable in the areas of the written word, teaching, psychology, and service."

Core Lesson: Placing the good of the group ahead of self-interest.

Goal: To be worthy of the trust of others

Challenge: Forcing themselves to interact socially, even if only superficially (very hard for me)

Fulfillment: Feeling that they are card-carrying members of the human race (I feel like you carry some cards in the FOG lol)

Gifts: Goal-oriented, courageous, idealistic

Pitfalls: Overly emotional, critical, petty (not very petty now that I am older, only as a child)

Release: The need for vanity and ego affirmation

Reward: The joy of giving oneself

Balance Point: Personal needs and societal needs

I feel like you're doing this--> "Develop a moral code, and live by it. Find some way to serve others, and stick to it.

End.

Heavy Downpours Increasing: Scientists

Islip, New York, has received an astounding 13.27 inches of rain in 24 hours, breaking a record set during tropical storm Irene back in 2011, according to the National Weather Service.

Officials declared a state of emergency today and reported that one motorist was killed on the Long Island Expressway after a collision with a tractor trailer. In Michigan, parts of major highways near Detroit are still shut down after six inches of rain fell Monday in a matter of hours.

Record-breaking rain storms like the ones this week, climate scientists say, are something people should get used to as they continue to warm the planet.

It doesn’t take much warming to have a significant impact on rain storms. For every one degree of temperature rise, the atmosphere can hold 7 percent more evaporated moisture, say scientists. (Temperatures in the U.S. have risen by as much as 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit since 1895.)

“When it rains, it pours,” says Kevin Trenberth, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. “Global warming encourages what would have been a normal rainstorm to become a real downpour and increases the risk of flooding.”

Heavy downpours have already increased significantly across the U.S. since 1958, researchers say, especially in the Northeast and Midwest.

It is forecasted to be a colder winter. Translate all that rain to snow. Talking feet instead of inches.

When are they ever going to stop that global warming bs?? When they are buried in 10 feet of snow? We haven't had so called GW since the mid 90's. Then there were only 2-3 decades of above average temps. Sheeeeesh

Woman Drives to Hospital After Alaska Bear Mauling

A 57-year-old woman drove herself to a hospital after she was mauled by a brown bear in Alaska, state troopers said Wednesday.

Thomas sustained substantial injuries, but they are not believed to be life-threatening, according to troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters.

"The trooper told me that when she checked herself into the hospital, he said it was almost like the people who were working on her were more shocked than she was," Peters said. "The trooper said she was very pragmatic and calm about everything."

Salmon were actively spawning in a nearby stream as Thomas hiked alone with her dog and a friend's dog, Peters said. The dogs ran off, then returned shortly with the bear running after them.

The bear noticed Thomas and attacked her multiple times. The dogs took off again as Thomas was being mauled.

After the attack, Thomas walked 1 ½ miles back to her truck.

YouTube user Aaron Spain called the Comcast customer service number and was put on hold for three hours. During the third hour he decided to make a video of the experience, and after hanging up he tried a different phone number to see if he could get through and cancel his service. He showed the phone call in progress, holding his phone up to the camera as shown in the video below.

Just threw some stuff together for an easy and fast early dinner. Thin cut boneless pork chops, seasoned with pepper and seasoning salt (Johnny's Seasoning Salt). Then some boxed spinach and cheese stuffed tortellini. Tossed in butter and a chopped tomato. I did smash the tomato some. But if you just toss tomato into pasta, the pasta gets soggy. Pics below.

Pics below.
