I do love hearing it all though. Within the US, and other countries. I've spoken a couple of times with a woman from Spain, from GLP. It was years ago now, but she had such a soothing voice. Very understandable. Mezzo is fun to talk to as well! His English is so good! Quoting: Simple27 And I don't even have an accent! LOL, I remember one time at work I had to call a German supplier over speaker phone and that guy said: "Wow, your German is really good!" And I replied instantly: "Thanks! Your German is quite good as well!" People are still laughing about it. We are taught English from an early age in school, but most of it picked it up from all the English tv shows. Even though in the late 60s and early 70s, we only had a few channels, Dutch and German. Watching Laurel & Hardy shows every Friday evening on the German TV, but they dub everything in German. They were called Dick und Doof in Germany. I can see Arnie shaking her head in total disbelief now, haha. Funny and sometimes annoying thing with that dubbing is that you often heard the same voice actors used for different shows. An old timer in a Western was always the same cracking voice. But I love languages and dialects. I pick it up quite fast. I speak German, French, English, general Dutch and Dutch dialect from the area. Even though we have quite a small country, we have a lot of different dialects. Especially in Southern Holland, in Limburg there are several dialects that you can't even understand. Maybe I should give a Dutch language course to y'all. Try to pronounce words with a hard "g", like "gebak", "gefeliciteerd" or "geneesmiddelenvergoedingssysteem."Anyway.. carry on! Quoting: InterMezzo Say what????? lol Quoting: WhiteAngel He added the words, didn't he!?! LOL I had a friend that used to say the only way we Americans could really speak Dutch was if we had a head cold and had a whole bottle of wine in us! I really think it's true. I can't roll my r's and can only occasionally get the hard g right. I'm embarrassed to admit, but I only remember one word for sure. I think the first means baked, the second, I'm sure, means congratulations to us. It means a bit more than that, but that's the jist. The third....absolutely no clue! It reminds me of when we got a notice from the city about road work. It took about that many letters just to say road work! |

I love hearing NY and New England accents. They are so different from where I grew up. When I worked at a PD in Rio Rancho, NM, just after it became it's own city, a section of Yonkers, NY was picked up and placed there. Over half the the PD was from Yonkers. NM are very cool and reserved, like no hugging and seeing friends and our speech was slow compared to NY. It took me a good 6 months to get used to how crude everyone talked. NM cussed but very mild to NY.
One young officer always said "Well break my balls" or "why don't youse just grab my balls and put 'em in a vice" in a strong Yonkers accent. If we all went to breakfast, the other officers always had to tell him "language" because people around us were horrified by his cussing. He f'ed every other word. He didn't even realize people were glaring at him. He was also very Italian so the hand gestures were wild as well. This was back in the mid 80's
Quoting: WhiteAngel This made me laugh, that guy sounds like a character! Quoting: KickinIt He was. I dated him for awhile and he took me how to a family dinner. There must have been 50 people or more there, including the little old ladies dressed in black. It was a hoot but for a timid New Mexican it was a priceless memory of getting over the shyness!!!! My face was patted so much by the older ones. They kept telling him "now, finally, you bring home a good girl. Marry her" It was so funny. I loved it even though all the loud voices were getting on my nerves. He dropped a F-bomb and the room went silent. ROFL Quoting: WhiteAngel This story gets better and better! It's like a movie. The patting of your face by all the older ladies, his excessive cussing (so unlike you), all the comments about balls. I'm dying! Quoting: KickinIt You'd have loved him. Joe was a character and had a very gentle soul, just a loud mouth. He died in the line of duty protecting a family. That still hurts my heart. |
