LEONID METEOR SHOWER ALERT: Earth is approaching the debris zone of Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, source of the annual Leonid meteor shower. This is not a good year for Leonids. The shower's nominal peak on Nov. 17th is expected to produce no more than 15 meteors per hour. But! There is a chance of a surprise. Some forecasters believe that Earth might graze a 300-year old stream of debris on Nov. 19th, producing an outburst of 50 to 200 meteors per hour. Its timing favors observers in the eastern half of North America, who should be alert for meteor activity this Saturday morning between 1:00 and 1:30 am EST.

LIFTOFF! ARTEMIS HAS LEFT EARTH: NASA's giant Artemis I rocket succesfully launched from the Kennedy Space Center on Nov. 16th at 1:47 am EST. The thrilling, thunderous launch lit up the night sky and shook the ground with almost 9 million pounds of thrust. NASA says that the Orion crew capsule (unoccupied for this first test flight) is now on its way to the Moon.

https://imgur.com/DsvnIvs

Dr. Gilbert Plumer watched the launched from Rockledge, Florida, where he photographed Artemis and its target (above). "Even though I was 20 miles from the launch pad, there was still enough light for me to read by," says Plumer.

This marks the beginning of a mission that could last as long as 42 days. After more than a week in transit, Orion will orbit the Moon for up to 19 days (approaching the lunar surface within 62 miles) and travel 40,000 miles beyond the far side of the Moon before turning back to Earth. The pictures it takes of the Moon during this time will be unique and spectacular.

https://imgur.com/3avzN79

The capsule will stay in space longer than any human spacecraft has (without docking to a space station) and return home faster and hotter than ever before. A key goal of the mission is to test Orion's heat shield when it slams into Earth's atmosphere at 25,000 mph and heats up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

If all goes well, future launches will carry crew. Astronauts will orbit the Moon in 2024 (Artemis II), then touch down near the Moon's south pole in 2025 (Artemis III). The moonwalkers will include the first woman to step onto the lunar surface.

Good point, understood! Mine was good mainly because we got some really good news at work about something we've been trying to make happen for nearly 2.5 years, so that was cool. It took a village too- 3-4 of us at work, outsiders we recruited to help, people they ultimately recruited, etc. So it was a broadly-shared joy so to speak, which adds to the feels.

Just had a 5.4 EQ in W TX - epicenter was approx 83 miles from me. Was sitting in a heavy, electronic recliner, and it started shaking! Caused the computer on my lap to noticeably shake. Shaking lasted 10-15 seconds. Kinda weirded me out!!

EDIT - based on the location on EMSC, the epicenter was actually over 100 miles from me!!! Bet folks in Pecos and Odessa and a couple of small towns in between really felt it!

I understand that the area west of Pecos is at the bottom of the North American Cratom.

Yep, that's a big one! I thought of you and was hoping you'd post. 100 miles seems far, but I have felt way smaller quakes from further away. They travel and hit differently for some of our locations.

hugs

News reports across the state say the quake was felt in Dallas and San Antonio! That's a long way off! Wonder if it's because it was so shallow.

Shallow, and the topography. People in CA are always like, "no big deal" if it's this size, but in other areas like where you and I are it's felt differently and felt harder. The biggest one I experienced here was a M5.4 also, and it felt way bigger. I felt my entire house swaying and I had trouble getting my footing. Freaked me out!
