El Hierro – While searching for updates on Fogo I was surprised to find this on the INVOLCAN site. Though everybody assumed at the time (June 2012) that an eruption could be in progress, it was always denied by the authorities. Half a year later it was first acknowledged locally, that there indeed had been an eruption. Yesterday INVOLCAN had this on their pages (Giggle translated):
( [link to www.involcan.org]
…reaffirms that near the west coast of El Hierro in June 2012, a second submarine eruptive process took place in the Meridian Island. The work was recently published by Bulletin of Volcanology, the offcial journal of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI). The manifestation of this underwater volcanic activity has been revealed through acoustic images of volcanic plumes submarines detected by a 20-kHz TOPAS PS18 aboard the oceanographic ship Hesperides last June 28, 2012. The five volcanic plumes observed “filamentary” emanating from the flanks of mounds were recognized between 64 and 88 meters pronfundidad located on the continental shelf west of El Hierro. These plumes show up well on TOPAS profiles as “flares” of high acoustic impedance in contrast within the water column. Moreover, these volcanic plumes submarines were also visible through floating white patches on the surface of the sea that were reported through aerial photographs taken on July 3, 2012, five days after the acoustic images of volcanic plumes by the Oceanographic Ship Hesperides were recorded. In addition, several geophysical and geochemical data support the fact that these underwater vents were preceded by several warning signs: (i) a sharp increase in the release of seismic energy and the number of daily earthquakes of magnitude ≥ 2.5 recorded on June 25 2012, (ii) significant vertical and horizontal displacements observed by GPS Canaria (University of Nagoya-ITER-GRAFCAN) with elevations up to 3 cm in 24 hours on 25 to 26 June 2012, (iii) a significant increase network activity of radon gas since late April to early June 2012 reaching maximum values of 2.7 kBq / m3 on June 3, 2012, and (iv) detecting a peak in the register of the issue Helium-3 on June 16, 2012. The combination of this information from the submarine and subaerial environment, suggest that these plumes are the result of undersea volcanic vents exhaled gas mixed with ash as a result of a volcanic event associated with a rapid rise of a volatile-rich magma located west of El Hierro. González, Teresa Medialdea, José Canyons, Jesús Ibáñez, Hirochika Sumino, Kenji Nogami and Carmen Romero (2014). Dec. 5, 2014 (GEOVOL): Activity at Fogo increased in the last hours. A very fluid lava has been emitted since yesterday from the vent at the bottom of the eruptive fissure at a speed of 3m/min. It follows a path parallel to the previous one to Portela village. In the video courtesy of Fogo News
[link to videos.sapo.pt] its fluidity can be seen. Also the reporter speaks of water tanks being contaminatedand which supply Tinteiras population, following the fall of volcanic ash. – Another issue at hand is the discussion on neglected responsibilities. INVOLCAN, monitoring and assessing the processes in Fogo, had sent an early warning to Cabo Verde in last March, stating that the volcano showed clear signs of serious unrest with the possibility of an eruption. That letter had not been answered, and obviously people were not sufficiently prepared when the eruption started
Dec. 5, 2014 (OceanPress):

Lavastream- Fogo Eruption opens new front of lava: The situation may become worse with a possible volume of lava that may leave the city of Portela completely buried and may reach Bangaeira and in a worst scenario, the city of the Mosteiros… – The municipality of Santa Catarina, on Fogo Island, plans to build a new village for the displaced from Chã das Caldeiras in “Somada”, a town between Achada Furna and Monte Largo … However, the inhabitants of the town of Chã das Caldeiras are not enthusiastic about this project, as they prefer the new village to be built in the region of Monte Velho…
– Professionals working in the caldera suffer health problems from toxic volcanic gases…

Letter: 'Oklahoma could very well be found to be responsible for the next big California earthquake ...'

There are currently so many major swarms of earthquakes going on in the Nevada, Oregon, and California region as well as a lot of earthquakes continuing in Oklahoma. Connections to these have been observed by an earthquake blogger and he has most recently come to the assumption that they might be all connected to the hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, currently taking place in Oklahoma.

If it can be proven that all that shaking at Oklahoma did transmit to those other shaky places nearby, then exactly how liable should Oklahoma be for damages and deaths since there were upwards of 220,000 deaths in the Haiti earthquake. Perhaps Oklahoma should be made to stop all of their fracking until all the shaking can stop, and safer methods can be implemented. Otherwise it would seem Oklahoma could very well be found to be responsible for the next big California earthquake.

I wonder, has anyone researched how big of an EQ is possible in that area? I know that USGS gives a rating to all fault lines, as to how big of a quake that could happen in that area. Like San Andreas is only suppose to be capable of an 8.8, yet a few of the side faults off of it are capable of being bigger.

I wonder what the OK quakes are capable of popping.

Dr. Todd Halihan, OSU Professor of Hydrogeology of Fractured Aquifers and Hydrophysics, states Oklahoma is now more seismically active than the state of California. He also explains fracking, wastewater injection and earthquakes.

“In Oklahoma, we’re really, really statistically unlikely. We’re playing Blackjack and winning lots of hands — way more than we statistically should,” Halihan said. “Statistically, it’s weird that a lot of them happen at the same time and there was a lot of injection going on, but you don’t have a tie that says, I feel that pressure right by where that happened and it went way up."

From January to May of 2014, seismic risk went up another factor in Oklahoma. “It’s not a slight statistic change,” Halihan said. “We haven’t gotten slightly more shaky. We’ve gotten way, way more shaky. Statistically, it’s really bizarre.”

Halihan referenced an updated report released by the U.S. Geological Survey which indicated that Oklahoma was likely to have a larger magnitude earthquake than it has experienced before, without indicating cause.

ONE MORE SIMPLE (*sorry*)...

Man-Made Earthquakes Are Changing the Seismic Landscape
Scientists say fracking is part of why Oklahoma now rivals California in quake activity.

The rate of 3.0-or-larger earthquakes in Oklahoma jumped by about 50 percent since last year alone—and the increase is even more dramatic if you look at Oklahoma's long-term quake history.

For 30 years—from 1978 until 2008—Oklahoma experienced an average of two earthquakes per year that measured 3.0 of bigger. But then something crazy happened. In 2009, the number of earthquakes began to shoot up. And it kept climbing. "People thought oh this might be a swarm of earthquakes, where you get a series of small quakes that build up to a bigger one then dies off," Williams said. "But this has just gone on and on. It's over a much broader area. We're not even calling it a swarm anymore. It's surprising."

No ma'am it did not. It seems to me that many experts do not want to throw out any predictions...only warnings that a sizable and damaging earthquake in this area is imminent.

I did find this pdf file that I think you'll find very interesting. It connects Oklahoma earthquakes to the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Oklahoma's east and west borders are 450 and 1,200 km from New Madrid...which raises concern of another large New Madrid earthquake occurring.

Oklahoma earthquakes have always concerned me, but lately the increased number of earthquakes in that area is alarming. I feel that Oklahoma being in the dead center of it all has the potential to trigger so many different earthquake scenarios... and the one that has always peeked my interest is The New Madrid Seismic Zone, since I live on this fault line.

Thank you for this. Did it happen to show how big a quake might be tripped?

No ma'am it did not. It seems to me that many experts do not want to throw out any predictions...only warnings that a sizable and damaging earthquake in this area is imminent.
