GeoNet is New Zealand's earthquake agency. EMSC has followed USGS's lead in downgrading quakes, ignoring 'insignificant' temblors, etc. So take it all with a grain of salt.

It is gusting here big time, or what we call down sloping winds that are blowing down from the Rockies. You would think this would mean it would be colder, coming off all the snow up there but it is always warm.

We are 44 degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this time.

It is SO windy here today. It actually woke me up a few times early this morning. At one point I was bracing myself thinking something was gonna fly through my bedroom window!

Last night at 10pm it was 52 degrees here!

i felt it and im on another island
its on the main vein so no suprise
nz is the worlds most exposed fault/scar

sadly this could precede to something alot bigger,
there will be many quakes worldwide if she slips.

this is EXACTLY where the Australian plate subducs the indopacific plate (think thats the right way around)
if it ruptures big, both plates will be dancing.
its very, very overdue in terms of a rupture
lots of pacific activity atm.
we might be delt a mega slip event today.

if it does, my city, will be delt a blow as the hikorangi fault will also slip.
when this fault las sliped in 1931, a 7.8mg quake caused 87% of all standing buildings to be leveled and the city destroyed entirely.
it remains nzs most fatal natural event.

i hope to not see it today lol
they tell us this will happen every 100 years

If you look at New Zealand on a map which shows sea depth you will see we sit on a large continent. During an ice age New Zealand is as big as Australia. Only a little bit pokes out during an interglacial period, ie now.

2 US ski team prospects die in avalanche in Austria

Two prospects from the U.S. Ski Team were killed in an avalanche Monday while skiing near their European training base in the Austrian Alps.

The U.S. ski team said Ronnie Berlack, 20, and Bryce Astle, 19, died in the incident near the Rettenbach glacier near Soelden, the venue for the annual season-opening World Cup races.

Berlack, from Franconia, New Hampshire, and Astle, from Sandy, Utah, were part of a group of six skiers who were descending from the 3,056-meter Gaislachkogel when they left the prepared slope and apparently set off the avalanche. The other four skied out of the slide and escaped unhurt.

Go throw a brick on it!

It's windy here and Flood Watches posted all over. Then again, we are used to winds from October thru March. Simple, you'd hate our wind storms. This time of year, 15 to 25 satiated winds and gusts up to 35 is just "breezy" for Seattle. Us hardened Pacific Northwesters don't even worry until we get gusts past 45 and sustained 25 thru 35. It's also January 5th and right now an hour before noon, it's 55 degrees out in Seattle. My back patio thermometer says 53.

It's a brand new week, that happens to be the first new full week in the new year.
